So I cleaned the weathering off SS this weekend and what a difference this makes! My only questions is how would one add the panel lines back in if some got erased?

The silver on the nose isn't hard to remove at all. Just do what I did - soak a bit of paper towel with the 91% alcohol, wrap it tightly around the nose, and secure it with rubber bands. Give the towel a twist every couple of minutes and re-wet it if needed.

Take it off about 15 minutes later, and the paint will practically fall off. You may have to rewrap it again for trouble spots, but you can get it off scrub-free.

For those of you that took the paint off the nose, how hard would it be to take the black off but leave the silver completely intact?

Not hard at all, the black comes off with the alcohol and light rubbing. The silver is much more resilient to the alcohol.

Does anyone know of a brand and color of hobby paint (or mixture of paints) that comes close to approximating the blue on MP SS? Since I foolishly removed some of the blue on his back fin, I'm trying to fix the damage up as much as I can through this method.

I've got some acrylic paints here, and I've already tried various combinations of "Bright Blue" Apple Barrel plaid, navy blue Folk Art plaid, and Anita's Craft black, but I couldn't get the right shade with these paints.

I'm guessing that a more conventional blue might work alone (though I doubt it), or with a minor mixture of that with white (to lighten), black (to darken), or maybe even red (with the mixtures that I've tried last night, it seemed too blue-green, and the red might bring in the extra purple color needed to balance that out).

Anyone done this yet, or have any suggestions?

After looking at the figure for a while I removed all weathering the first night I got it. Wow, it looks awesome, I love this mold now more than I ever did. The clean look is so much nicer.

I went a step further and panel lined any part of the figure that did not have them. Then I stole the Decepticon symbol from MP-03's nose in true Starscream fashion. Finally I switched the faces with MP-03 so now my MP SS has the correct dark color face! This is truely G1 Starscream! Taking the head apart is actually not that hard to swap out faces.

Aw shit, I had to come and read this AFTER scrubbing for an hour. Sounds like a great method, I'll try it tomorrow night. An hour spent with 91% alcohol and a box of Qtips got me almost nowhere. I can see a teeny streak of blue but I have a long way to go.

That said, holy crap was this guy dirty! I thought it was just going to be the streak on his back but there was grime everywhere. It looked like Starscream made a splashdown in a mud puddle. Luckily all that came off easy. Just can't wait to get the silver off the nose and thruster flaps.

Unfortunately I'm out of time for tonight and need to go sleep of the isopropyl fumes...

The weathering is very random on these guys. I own um..... three of him. (yeah, I'm embarrassed and hoping to paint up a TC and SW.) One, the one pictured in the first post, had GOBS of dirt. BLACK with weathering and ick. Everywhere, like you say. One had the same amount of black behind the airbrake, but the wings and the rest of him was clean. And the 3rd one had hardly any weathering anywhere. That guy only had a light grey streak behind the airbrake.

Yeah, I kind of figured the weathering was really random. Mine actually had more grime on the underside of the wings than on the top side. There was even grime on the sides of the intakes and on the sides of the cockpit. The shit was EVERYWHERE. I'm not complaining though because it was very easy to remove, it's just kind of funny how filthy he was. My first thought was, "Starscream, did you crash land on Dagobah or something?" I should have posed him with a Star Wars Action Fleet Luke, R2 and Yoda and taken a picture. :)

Just wondering... Why does everybody want a blue nosecone? Only the G1 toy had a blue nose. The animation was always a gray/white nose.

no, no, he has a point and you missed it.

the point is, ppl keep talking abt cartoon accuracy in reference to his upside down logos yet conveniently overlook the nosecone which, by being blue, is accurate to the toy, not the cartoon.
