One of the realities of collecting Transformers toys, is that sooner or later HasTak are going to redo a character that you already have, and many of us will "upgrade" and replace a once valued figure with the shiny new version. This has become very prevalent in the mainline, with characters that were only just done (or updated) in Siege, immediately being replaced in Earthrise/Kingdom. MP collectors too find that their "definitive" version has been updated with a new hat, or a closer to Sunbow appearance. The most recent example being MP-52, which will for some be the third (4th?) Masterpiece Starscream on their shelf. Others may have a 3rd party "placeholder" figure that gets replaced when an official figure is released. None of this is to say that the older version of a character is bad, it's just with the very nature of collecting fans always want the newest release. Many of the older figures will still have a fond place in many of our hearts, so this thread is to honour those fallen heroes (and villains) that no longer have a spot on our shelves. I'll start us off with a few figures I have to hand Ark crew veterans! Like many, I've replaced nearly all of the 84 car-bots in my CHUG collection. The only survivors are Classics Mirage and Henkei Hound. Seekers ("Uh, Starscream, what is it we're seeking again?" "Um... shut-up Ramjet!") As much as we've all moaned about how hard Hasbro has made it to collect all the Earthrise Seekers, with all the damn exclusives, at least they were all released in the same line. This lot took YEARS to get the band together! Out Scaled Two bots that have had newer, more to scale figures released recently. I'd still argue Classics 'Bee is one of the greats, and with arguably the best head-sculpt for the character. Smokies Deluxes 10 years apart. Siege Smokescreen had a very short time on the shelf! I couldn't find another thread for this, but I'm sure this will get merged if there is one I've overlooked. Anyway, share away, it's great to see pics of older figures that don't get the love that the new bots get anymore
GDO Generations Springer. He was out of date the moment I got the fantastic 2014 Voyager Springer. He does still hang out in the collection because the figure is excellent, I just use him as a stand-in for G1 Crossblades. GDO Wheelie, too, since TR Wheelie is a proper fit - the only thing is the latter doesn't have a slingshot but GDO does. But GDO Wheelie also remains in the collection because my dad called him 'Crabshack' and the name just stuck for me.
Oddly enough, MP-45 Bumblebee. I've had the figure since it came out, but I looked it over recently and I can't say that it moves the needle for me anymore (not sure that it ever did). Yeah, it's a much better take on the Sunbow design than MP-21, but it's still a bit of a mess with all of the folded up panels that comprise the feet and backpack. I tried to give it a chance as I think 1.5 years on my shelf is pretty indicative of that. I'm not against cartoon accuracy at all. I can even forgive most backpacks, but this toy is especially egregious with all of its design faults and that's the main reason why I never went out of my way to sell off my MP-21 copy.
G1 Reissue Jazz loses to SS86 Jazz. Earthrise Cliffjumper loses to SS Cliffjumper. Earthrise Bumblebee loses to SS B-217. Robotmasters Beast Megatron loses to Kingdom Megatron. Siege Starscream loses to SS Starscream. Encore Hoist loses to Earthrise Hoist. Encore Trailbreaker loses to Earthrise Trailbreaker. Encore Sky Lynx loses to Earthrise Sky Lynx. G1 Snapdragon loses to Earthrise Snapdragon. G1 and Generations Doubledealer lose to Earthrise Doubledealer. Botcon Huffer loses to Earthrise Huffer.
I cleared out some unwanted DVDs and made more room for what I call my retro shelf. Just moved some of my favorite older bots over to it. So far, I have not had to deal with bots that no longer fit. I have enough junk lying around that would go first to make a new shelf for my misfit bots.
