well, Disney gets another easy billion... Hamilton Film, With Original Broadway Cast, Will Premiere in October 2021 | Playbill
I wouldn’t call it Disney’s since it’s the same show. They’re just distributing it. .. Yeah, it’s Disney's. I always wondered what they’d gobble up next and Hamilton with the original cast is a suitably big event they can squeeze another billion out of. Again, it’s not like they made it, but yeah. It’ll be fun considering Hamilton is a hard PG-13 at best with infidelity, murder, swearing, and the line “sit down John, you FAT MOTHERFUCKSTICK”.
I doubt Disney is going to do anything to the recording to make it more suitable for family audiences. The show is way to popular for them to go through and attempt to censor the recording. I am super excited to finally see the recording. I never got to see it with the original cast so I'm super excited to finally see this. But damn Disney is really going to have all the money in the world over the next couple of years.
So for those wondering, they are simply distributing a professionally filmed performance of the show back when all the original actors played their parts. It will be amazing for people who can’t afford to see in on stage, but won’t appeal to everyone given that it’s still a broadway musical.
Disney 'Fast Tracking' Hamilton Film for July VOD Release The Walt Disney Company, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail are pleased to announce that Disney+ will fast track the premiere of the filmed version of the original Broadway production of “Hamilton,” bringing the 11-time-Tony Award®-, GRAMMY Award®-, Olivier Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning stage musical to homes around the world on July 3, 2020. Producers for “Hamilton,” the film of the original Broadway production, include Miranda, Seller, and Kail, who also directs. The film is a leap forward in the art of “live capture” which transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. Combining the best elements of live theater, film, and streaming, the result is a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience “Hamilton.” No other artistic work in the last decade has had the cultural impact of ‘Hamilton’—an inspiring and captivating tale told and performed in a powerfully creative way. In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful,” said Robert A. Iger, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company. “We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind ‘Hamilton’ to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.” “I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” said Lin-Manuel Miranda. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.” We shall have to see how this live capture feature goes.
I'm currently watching this for the first time (in between other holiday tasks). Seems very appropriate to watch this on the 4th.

Can someone explain to me what the big deal is about Hamilton? I tried to watch it and turned it off after 10 minutes. I don't get it. Is there something special about it? Or it is just popular because it's another Broadway play? Honestly, I also think Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and some of those other musical plays are meh.
Reasons being why people like it to put it simply: The music The writing The acting The cast itself and how the characters are portrayed The themes and messages resonated with people Lin-Manuel Miranda himself But if its not your cup of tea, seeing how even you find those other classic musicals meh, that and only giving a 2 hour and 40 minute long stage production 10 minutes. I think its just may not be for you and that's fine too. Has nothing really to do with it being a broadway play, its just a good musical play and you can see the hard work put into it.
If you don’t like musicals then that’s your problem honestly. Not everyone likes everything. But people like Hamilton for the historical fictional story it tells, it’s characters who are all played excellently by a very talented cast, the wordplay in the book and lyrics, the blending of all kinds of music, and the novelty of using rap and modern music to tell what was mostly just boring old white people sitting around debating with each other.
