Was the Siege toyline a waste of space in WFC?

With the recent listings of the Earthrise two pack of Prowl and Ironhide along with a bunch of new earth modes of characters we've already gotten in Siege that had modes that look pretty earthy to begin with was there an actually reason for Siege to exist?

I mean think about it. Earthrise is basically giving us THE definitive updated figures of iconic G1 characters yet in the last line we got the same characters having almost the same exact alt modes but with minor tweeks given to them. At the time we all thought the WFC trilogy as a whole will be all about G1 characters having Cybertronian modes with the next trilogy centering on Earth modes yet Earthrise features earth modes for characters that already got pretty earthy looking alt modes to begin with. So if they were going to give us definitive G1 updates of those characters with the exact earth alt modes they're known for then why didn't they start the trilogy on that to begin with? Why start the line with having the characters having alt modes that weren't much different from the Earth modes they'll eventually have in Earthrise?

I'm dissing the Siege line don't get me wrong. There's a lot of cool stuff in it however with what I've mentioned I think if they were going to give us regular Earth modes in the WFC trilogy they should've started with the Earthrise molds instead and have the remaining spaces for those who have yet to get new molds.

    What do you guys think?

This is exactly WHY they didn't release the earth modes first. They get double the sales from many collectors replacing characters from WFC with their new Earthrise counterparts. It's profit, pure and simple, at least that's how I see it.

Yup. I love Siege Optimus but I would have never bought him had Earthrise come first. And I haven't even opened Siege Smokescreen. They played this smart from a money perspective.

Eh, I'm used to the nature of incremental improvement from the abusive video game industry. Not really gonna get bent outta shape over new versions if they're good enough, doesn't really nullify the enjoyment I've already had out of my current stuff.

Even though I dont collect this line, I like both versions. Guess it's the "G1" in me. But I do agree that we should see other characters besides the 1984 line.

No. I think it was a very good idea to place the first bit of the War for Cybertron Trilogy on Cybertron.

If anything, I'm of the opinion that outside of a handful of figures, Earthrise is the one taking up space.

I feel the complete opposite. I wish the second half of WFC had stuck with the improved quality and the Cybertronian vehicle modes, Earthrise feels like a return to normal (except Cliffjumper, who is amazing).

Siege’s designs were better than the G1 on steroids of Earthrise. Siege Smokescreen? Beautiful. Earthrise Smokescreen? That headsculpt just looks bad. If anything, Earthrise has been wasting spaces. We could’ve finished up the 86 cast by the end of the line, that way Part III could focus on 87 - 89.
That being said, Earthrise’s gimmick is hands down the better of the two.

I don't think so. I was super into the Cybertronian modes since I missed out on the entirety of previous War/Fall of Cybertron lines. If anything I'm a tad bummed that they are already moving onto(excellent)Earth mode versions since I could have enjoyed a lot more Cybertron stuff. I also feel like the recent Netflix figures nail the battle damage motif much better than the original versions so I would have liked to see how the decos would have evolved through more of the war. I love Earthrise but I must admit that a lot of what they have shown us so far excites me less than my hype at the same point in Siege.

Definitely the other way around for me, Earthrise is mostly just diet MP and I've already got an MP collection. Completionists will buy whatever old crap Hasbro decides to put out; I've already got good figures of most of these characters at a scale I prefer, so you've really got to blow me away or release different characters to get me to buy in.

Yep. I'm replacing Siege OP with the ER version cause I think it looks better but I'm skipping the rest of the repeats without a hint of regret. I never thought they looked much like Cybertronian alt modes anyway. More like futuristic Earth modes in my opinion.

No, I don't think so, Siege was a great taste of some cybertronian designs and I still enjoy it and ER for entirely different reasons.

I mean yeaaa but it was expected

I just think they should’ve spaced this out with the different versions over the next few years, instead of in one year. Just I don’t think Hasbro will fool us into buying another definite version of Prowl, Ironhide, etc... for at least a good 5 to 10 years

This is what disappoints me about Siege in retrospect. I’d feel less resistant towards redone ER figures if the Siege figures had actually pushed the Cybertronian aspect. As is, most of Siege is “close enough” to Earth vehicles that ER versions feel redundant.

Honestly? Everyone has been after that 'definitive' version of the G1 cast. And if 3rd parties have taught us anything, its that people will continue to buy different versions just to experience them. Don't expect Earthrise Optimus to be your last. There will always be something just a liiiiittle more enticing. If you see a toy, you buy it, and you like it? Great, no money wasted. But if you're aiming for perfection... Then you are Hasbro's bitch and you will be buying these things forever. :)

So really, just enjoy the ride.
