Love this idea! They could also re-work the handle/hilt/ central spine of the combined sword to connect the hands together and serve as the tail for said scorpion.
But FR has articulation in his sword handle and it... well, it's something one has to be aware of when posing.

You're better off discussing it on the Winged Dragon thread... In any case, why would you think it would be cheaper? The stores have paid to import them over.

If they're going to articulate the thumbs, they should at least do it so that they get full range of motion. Those just look goofy.
