I never understood this logic. This is one STUPID human being. But why does he have to be representitive of his homeland? I'm pretty sure he'd be stupid anywhere in the world.

He should, however, face whatever the maximum penalty is for defacing ancient ruins.

 

Kids these days. Hope they fine him like hell.

 

Ironically, tourists have been carving their names into Egyptian monuments for hundreds of years.

The country let you in, you're a guest, you don't mess things up while you're there.

Now there'll be someone watching every Chinese person that goes near a historical spot. Sorry, deep down, it'll almost be like racial profiling. If he/she dressses like a hoodlum, talks like a hoodlum, walks like a hoodlum, your first impression (and possible treat) that person like a hoodlum.

On a smaller scale, you let your friends into your house....it's expected they won't pee on your bed, or carve their name on your fridge, or kick your dog, or clog your toilet through non-natural means, etc.

 

But that's just it. There should be security watching EVERYBODY, regardless of race, going near historical spots, especially ones that have a history of vandalism.

 

Well, read the article. The Chinese are all pissed at the 15 year old for bringing dishonor to their country. Asian families, and countries, are known for honor and image. For example, if a Chinese family had a newborn be a daughter, there's a larger chance she is put up for adoption than a son since men are more likely to bring wealth. There's something called a difference of cultures, you know.

To the point that you can find "*name* was here" carved in everything from Hieratic to modern languages all over them.

 

Implying any parents would be proud of their child for doing this or people from the same country

 

That's what I was going to say. Having been there myself, I can tell you that almost every surface of that place has been defaced. It's really quite ugly up- close. Though, I don't recall seeing anything carved directly into the hieroglyphs quite like this. I think this got more attention because it wasn't in a place where others were already there. This was blatantly done on a featured part of a tour.

Here's how close you get, I'm actually kind of surprised it has kept so well after so much contact.

REAL Hieroglyphics! Do you know how surreal it was to be able to touch those? It was amazing, like being in a museum and being allowed to touch the artwork! So Cool!!!

 

Ironic when certain tourists here shout out their country's name while vandalizing my city. There's only one country that does that with such pride.

 

Not to defend the person who made the graffiti, but this kind of thing gets kind of interesting after a certain amount of time passes. They recently discovered some interesting...um.....male units.....drawn in the Colosseum.
