So, got my MP Megs back out after some time in the box, and I've noticed he is certainly getting the cosmic rust I've been hearing about in regards to him. Got a pic here I took where you can see it on the feet: There's also some on his back area, on the metal spine. There any kinda way to fix this/prevent it, and what kinda long term problems could this cause?
you can go to your local hardware store and buy a brass tarnish remover and apply it on the metal parts.
Mine has it very badly on the feet as well. If you find something that works well for removing it, let me know.
About when all this started 8 or so months ago I just used alcohol to take off all the rust then applied clear nail polish over all the metal parts and no rust has returned since.
At least it was an inexpensive figure. What a pisser... I just checked mine and its still gleaming... but then again, mine has only been out of the box a couple times since I have nowhere to display it. I wonder if finger oils and moisture from handling it get the rust started...
you can rub it off with your fingers, actually. any transformer that has shiny, bare die-cast is prone to this "problem". G1 Megatron, for instance. his upper legs.
I've had my MP-5 on display in a dust proof glass display case since I go him about 6 months ago, no tarnish yet. Some metals will oxidize and yield a tarnish over time and this is normal. A product like Brasso, or even high % alcohol will remove this thin oxidized layer from the metal's surface. The only way to prevent it coming back would be to seal the metal from contact with the air by using a coating of something like clear coat or nail varnish.
Use Enamel Nail polish remover and rub it hard. it should come off. then clear coat using a gloss. If your in the US, Krylon is the best way to go.. in the UK either rustoleum or plastikote can get the job done.
I have this problem as well would CLR work or is that to abrasive? How am I supposed to spray it with clear coat? Are the feet easily removed?
Guys, this stuff can be easily removed with a jewelry polish/cleaning cloth with out any harm to nearby plastic parts.
I just sold my MP Megs after he had been in a tote for a few months. When i stored him, he had none of that rust, but when i took him out, he had it on the feet. If you don't have the rust yet, i'd also go the Krylon route.
I have plenty of those, I use them to wash my car with. I am not buying jewelery polish though only to clean MP Megs. I was hoping to use something I already have.
