OP: Mix of Toon and Toy; G1 and Masterpiece

Now that I'm more confident in my abilities to draw tf's I wanted to start developing my own style. So who better to start with then my favorite bot? He's a mix of toon and toy, both G1 and Masterpiece. My favorite parts are the G1 toy shoulders, arms, and wheels on his hip. I have the exaggerated curvy lines on purpose, I want it to have a tagged feel, if that makes sense. I took a sketch I started 2 years ago as the base and developed it. This is 22x28, like my version of Nich Roche's PM OP, and will end up on my wall.

I certainly think this is a good experiment in branching out with your own style  

Optimus' head looks a little squashed in, but other than that, it looks like you're off on a great start. Keep us posted!  

 

when you say squashed are you refering to his mouth plate or that his helmet is to narrow?

 

A little bit of both, but mainly the helmet.

 

yeah, i see what you mean, it bothered me before. i'll see what i can do. his helmet has ALWAYS given me trouble.

awww, you meant width wise, i was thinking you meant depth. making it shorter and wider really helps it out. i'll remember that on the next one.

ok, long needed update. i inked this before i started coloring my powermaster op but forgot to post the pic.



i'm almost finished with colors and will post those shortly.

 

I can already hear him saying "Autobots, roll out!". Awesome!

 

so this was my "study" before i started the big version. you see the changes i made. i went ahead and colored this to see what it would look like and other than the yellow eyes and areas on the arms this is what i went with. also decided to add the trailer stripe to break up the background. i suck with the cast shadows on things with slanted edges and raised areas so if you see anything that needs to be changed and/or added, please let me know because i haven't started them on the real version yet.

I realey like your style here it very dynamic and i like the face plate it feels like it is jutting forward. So who can we expect next?

thanks! i'm new to this so it's a learning process. i'm not sure who'll be next. i think i'm going to take a break from the larger scale pieces for a while.

did some more work. decided to grab a pencil and shade overtop the marker. i'm trying really hard to make the face look more 3d and not flat/smushed. if anyone has any tips or suggestions please fell free to make them. oh, and the stripe isn't crooked, the picture was when i shot the pic.

 

These things always turn out so fantastic!

Looks sweet! Only thing I would do is darken up the neck a little bit. The face shield gets lost in it a bit. I think just a little more contrast would make it pop.
