Ugh, this looks terrible. Robot mode is mess, it's spindly from the front and chunky from the side. The hips are too narrow. That wheel design under the wings is clever but poorly executed.
    Shuttle mode colors are terrible

The whole thing looks like it's overengineered with poor tolerances. So many panels flapping about.

Stick to throttlebots please toy world. Their dinobots and headmasters look terrible

    DX9s is crap as well

There is room on the market for a third Astrotrain.

I agree that the Throttlebots are super great, but the dinobots, Inifinitor/Grant, Orion, and Hegemon are pretty great figures in their own right as well.

    Hegemon is cool

I see no appeal in a downsized g1 fort Max. I have warden which kicks ass.

Orion needed one or two more refinement stages. Too many tabs and tolerances not clean

Dinobots are ugly and combining dinobots are stupid

I see the appeal for a smaller Fort Max. If you decided that G1 wasn't for you or didn't have the display space, you'd be able to buy all three versions (if TW comes out with a Brave Max repaint) for a little over what the G1 reissue originally retailed for with the US retailers. Being one of the people who don't really care for G1 but bought the reissue anyway, I've thought about getting rid of my reissue to make space for all three repaints and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I absolutely agree with Orion. Great idea and hell, we can even argue it was a great attempt at execution but the transformation just is NOT fun. Props to anyone who can transform him easily but I am just not one of those people.

I like the idea of combining dinobots but really don't like TW's attempt. That said, I did buy Roar because he feels great in hand -- chunky, strong, super strong ratchets, and heavy for his size. But the more I see him next to my FP and PX dinobots and the more I see the other figures TW has lined up for this group, the less I'm impressed with them and basically want out. But don't get me wrong -- the figure itself is great but I'm just one of those collectors who don't want any part of a team if I don't plan on getting the rest. I guess we'll see though since these guys do a pretty good job in filling in the space for a modern (but VERY faithful to G1) dinobot team.

But not to get side tracked, great reviews on Evila Star guys! I was totally on board with Chigurh before the review (because of all the gaps that won't close and that last piece of excess kibble), so I was hoping to be completely swayed by the TW version since I saw it at TFCon. Sadly, I have to agree with the reviewers -- I love the engineering/transformation on Evila Star but I just can't get over the G1 toy look. If they could've been more faithful to the G1 cartoon it would be harder to make a decision but hiding that chestplate in that slot instead of opening it up doesn't quite go far enough for me. I guess it's good to have options :)

This figure kicks ass. When I first got it, a bunch of things needed fixing, such as little bits of glue here and there to increase friction between parts. After making all those fixes and changes, he is solid as ever with no panels flapping around anywhere. I even fixed the wheels under the wing so that they tab in, so that doesn't flap around either, and it wasn't a big fix at all.

As for the colours, at first I wanted the Grey / purple, but this would not work on this figure, and the custom that had that paint job didn't look right either. There is something to be said at all the details that can be seen when this figure has a lot of white to contrast with. The shuttle mode is much more human looking, so any colour other than white would have only detracted from that look (the purple bits just serve to break up and add some more contrast). Train mode is absolutely evil. This really is a figure you need to play around with in hand to get the scope of how sweet it is. He just needs to be slightly fixed out of the box, and actually posed properly to live up to the potential.

How did you fix the wheels? I just unplug the sticks from the middle wheels and stick/fit them under the black panel that makes the top of the train (or below the backpack if you prefer).

You know the little peg hole that is used in train mode to secure the front most wing sections? That Triangular part of the wing? Well that peg hole can be used to peg the grey bar peg that is connected to all the wheels. You need to cut/sand away enough of the peg that it isn't exactly round anymore, more squared off at a diagonal angle so that in shuttle mode, the grey bar can run diagonally down the length of the underside of the wing and tab into that peg hole. It causes the other wheel to unpeg from the bar, but it is the most solid way to keep the bar pegged without it flapping around, and also hidden from top view of the shuttle. And don't worry, now that you cut away a bit of the grey peg, it will still fit back in that third wheel it connects to in train mode. Gradually cut or sand away enough till you get a tight fit that isn't too tight.
