Hello everyone, as I am always interested in finding new music, I figured that I'd ask around this board whether any people around here are playing in bands or small music projects. Since the explosion of youtube, bandcamp and other outlets, it's been difficult to keep track with interesting stuff, since you have millions of bands at your fingertips and you are getting kind of lost in a flood of content. So really, I am always up to hear people's stuff (I mostly listen to punk/rock/hardcore, folk, singer/songwriter stuff, but everything is welcome) and would be very interested if there are board members out here willing to share their ideas and music .
I've written some filk (folk music for sci-fi/fantasy fans) ballads, but never actualky put them to music. I'm not much of a musician myself, and I can't read music, but I do enjoy attempting to write lyrics. I can post some of them if you want. I really should record them one of these days...
Well, come on, post some of them here, I‘ve never heard of such a mixture of folk and lyrics grounded in science fiction, even if you haven‘t gotten around to recording, sounds freaky in an interesting kind of way . As for not being able to read musical notation and not being much of a musician: don‘t let that stop you, find some fellow people and just try to work something out. I can only play bass guitar and cannot read a single musical note, except for tabulature, but that hasn‘t stopped me from playing and recording stuff in bands (just follow the diy-ethos ).
My girlfriend and I are currently working on an acoustic/alto sax duo. We've only got like 5 songs in our set and we don't have a name yet, but it's a start. Also I did this like 8 or 9 years ago. They're all pretty rough recordings but I did them all myself.
I will post one of them. I have a musical family, so I'll see what I can do. Here are the lyrics: Spoiler Ballad of the Pioneer/Lot of the Pioneer To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. As a child, the lad always gazed, Upwards, towards the stars, He watched in awe, as rockets blazed towards the Moon. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. The lad knew he wanted to fly, he grew from a boy to a man, he studied hard, so he could fly, he was chosen, to blast off in a can. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. To Mars, he was to travel, To that red rock in the sky, As the rocket lifted off the pad, He got a final glimpse of the Blue Marble. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. The ship flew for months, Until it reached the red, rocky world, Known as Mars, They descended with a mighty roar. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. After all of their travels, They were on the frontier, Hopefully, their camaraderie could never unravel, On this red frontier. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. One day, a sandstorm raged, The man watched in horror, As the hab fabric was torn asunder, he sealed the hole with his own body. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. As he froze, he let no air past him, Giving his comrades time to get suits on. His comrades, sadly interned him, In the rust red dust of Mars. To go forth, into the unknown, To settle new worlds, And survive threats unknown, That is the lot of the pioneer. Filk, by the way, is an obscure little subgenre I discovered by accident. There's a lot of it on YouTube if you're curious. If you want more information, feel free to PM me.
I quite liked the first song of your old recordings, conveys a lot of emotion and it's very melodic. Even more impressed that you did it all by yourself. So please share any recordings of your new project of your girlfriend and yourself.
Unfortunately I possess none of that equipment anymore save the guitars, lol. Someday I plan on getting a new iMac and some gear. I'll share some videos as soon as we take some.
i like the layered vocals on that acoustic track. sounds pretty good for rough recordings i play bass (sometimes banjo and guitar too) in a band called kelley nash. we don’t really have any official recordings but we have decent video of a show we played a few years back. Kelley Nash
i started writing some hip hop a couple years ago but only recorded about 4 songs n i think i lost the tape lol i can play guitar ok but not often enough that i'm any good
While I have no music of my own to share, I do have a youtube channel dedicated to the island metal and rock scene, specifically live videos. I have recorded a number of well known established bands (most recently Vio-Lence) but the local talent is the channel's bread and butter. YouTube (Excuse my megadorkyedgelord youtube name, I've been planning on changing it for a while now)
Thanks a lot people for sharing your stuff here. Is anyone doing some stripped down projects or collaborations during these pandemic times? In my suddenly much more extensive free time we‘re three people from my pop culture satire band, each one doing stuff in their respective home offices and then putting it together for a whole new record. We‘ve already finished about 5 songs, and the stuff gets more stupid by the day (likely caused by social isolation and a mild case of cabin fever ).
I'm still a very fledgling music artist, myself, instrumentally. Vocals however, are my strong suit, and have been since my first schooling days, haha. All I got so far is a Launchkey 61 and Ableton Live. Still trying to find my first synth, and probably gonna also get FL Studio, Reason and Logic Pro as the time goes by, just so i'm able to have a lot of different options with my music suite. Had a couple ideas, but always had trouble extending them into full tracks. Step by step, I suppose.
I've got some new equipment getting delivered tomorrow. Presonus Audiobox 2 channel USB interface, and Audio-technica AT2020 mic and Audio-technica ATH-M20x studio headphones. I also bought a ukulele a few weeks back and have learned a few songs on it so I'm going to spend some time familiarizing myself with Studio One and hopefully I can start recording some acoustic tracks again. I've really been wanting to re-record a lot of the songs I posted earlier in the thread, and I've got a couple new ones to track. After this my PC needs some upgrades, then I'm going to look into getting a MIDI controller and a new electric guitar so I can start recording full ensemble projects again. It's been entirely too long since I've been able to record music and I am beyond excited to start again.
Soundcloud: Murasame Mixcloud: Mixcloud Hearthis.at: Murasame Unfortunately I haven't found time for my music since 2007. Also removed the tracks I intended for release. Oh, my track Nemesis Prime was actually on a compilation "Eclectic Youth" by FOEM. FOEM/Eclectic Youth Vol. 16 - FOEM
My Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_KbclCXXpJxfy4nBiaMs9A Pretty much homemade comedy rock. Mostly in French. Musitards: when I go electric P.I.P.: when I go crapoustic (unplugged electric guitar) Frog the Dry Chain: instrumental acoustic Minitards: random music bits from my kids recorded over the years
One of the last songs I've recorded, just before Christmas. Actually, my 6 y.o. was at the piano while I was working when she came up with a bunch of notes that sounded cool. I proceeded to record her thinking, "Hey, maybe I could turn that into a Christmas song or something later". It's actually that recording of her you hear at the beginning, I recorded the other parts and my 10 y.o. ended up playing the drums (he was taking lessons but had to stop in March 2020 because of the pandemic) at the last minute (he played his part over my track while he was at his mother's place and I ended up replacing my drum loops with his live recording). So, some kind of family effort. It's instrumental. That's part of a Christmas compilation I did with all the (mostly silly) Christmas songs I've recorded since 2004 (12 total).
And you never told me Personally, I'm a guitar player with some drum knowledge. I've always wanted to start a band, I was apart of a few shows The School of Rock I went did and outside of that, I tried to start a band twice with all but my best friend (a drum player) backing out almost immediately. My greatest problem is my voice, I used to have a really good singing voice till puberty just destroyed it. My biggest problem with me doing my own music is I just don't have anyone to sing it as, I can play guitar, bass, and rig up a digital drum machine long enough to crack out something, I just have no one to sing it. Tech stuff is a whole other thing, I'm fucking king on an audio board. I got all my experience from rigging up all of my school's audio boards for mass and I've gotten good at it since. That is awesome. I am defiantly interested in that subgenre.
I have decided that I am going to learn how to play a piano. Anyone else have any experience with a piano?
