one of the most important things in advertising a movie and gaining peoples interest in that movie is the cover. if it looks generic, people probably won't be interested. but if it looks artistic, and BOLD, then people (I think) are more likely to become intrigued. so this is the thread for interesting movie covers you like. here is an example of one I quite like:
My favorites are mostly biased, in that they feature films that I already hold in high regards. So that when I see the image, I see the movie. But I can say that they are posters that I marveled at before I had viewed the actual movie that they are advertising, and really made me want to see them. Honorable mentions: Star Wars posters, Gone With The Wind, the first Jurassic Park, numerous Marvel films.
I really love the busy fantasy look of many 80s posters, where you can seemingly spot something new every time. The Star Wars movies all have great posters like this. Lots of great composition & a lot packed into each image. Labyrinth is a classic penultimate example as are the Elm Street movies from parts 1-5.
I love the Dream Warriors poster. I used to have one but my brother got ahold of it and tore it to shit.
Part 1, 3 & 4 are my favorite posters from that series (and also my favorite movies in that series too, hmm...). It was years before I noticed that Freddy’s house is at the bottom of the Dream Warriors poster! It kind of blends in with the dark blues & usually all the credits are obscuring it. I had to find the clean versions to really show off everything going on in them. And they must’ve had the same artist do those posters, because the style & themes are consistent all throughout. The skeleton claw, the one eyeball that’s practically floating free of the skull, and the whole ethereal quality of them all. I’ve always loved this set of posters. I mentioned Star Wars & it’s criminal not to show them all off individually but here it is anyway.
This has always been a fav, but it was always funny to me that almost everything on it is screen-accurate, except for Vader's lightsaber. It's like he has a light-dagger/light-shortsword that he only ever used for this one poster. And then there's these:
Speaking of the Nightmare posters, they were painted by Matthew Joseph Peak. He also did the DVD cover art for Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy documentary, and he talks about the art in it as well.
Nice! I don’t think I’ve seen those posters before. Just the standard Freddy’s Dead one that’s a pretty big departure from the first 5. Cool that he still got to do one.
This one wasn't a poster, I'm pretty sure. But it was a for a dvd cover release. Just the fact that somebody figured out how to make the title, "Princess Bride" legible both upside down and rightside up, deserves major props, I'll say.
