I hav a feeling Spidey will be an Avenger for a long time. He has to much tied into the Avnegers at the moment.

    Blasphemer!

In any case, "Wha Huh?", despite being an injoke one-shot, had a funny panel of, "What if characters aged in real time?"

Captain America was a skeleton. :p

Young Avengers is starting to lose me.

Everything about the "Kang" arc was great, but the newest few issues are losing me. This has as much to do with the art as anything else, but the writer's attempt to pull off Bendis-esque dialogue isn't working, either. Not only did the costumes and names get changed ("Wiccan?" Bite me), but whoever's currently handling penciling chores is, in a word, terrible. Is the normal guy on temporary hiatus, or is the New Guy permanent? The new arc's kinda flat (Ooooh... a teen superhero who uses drugs? Haven't seen THAT since two weeks ago), and the art approaches terrible.

More than anything else, this is what pisses me off about Marvel lately - the inability to keep a penciler on a title for more than 3 consecutive issues. NYX, Ultimate Secret, Runaways, Young Avengers, Normal Avengers... the list goes on. One grows accustomed to a writing/art team (ala most of DC's titles), and it's awfully jarring when the story continues, but you get a crap-ass "guest penciler" for every fourth issue. This book has one more issue to improve and/or stabilize, or it's gone.

The Wildstorm Signature and Vertigo books are all superior, anyway. Do yourselves a favor - skip the normal Marvel stuff next month and snag Ex Machina, Y: The Last Man, Silent Dragon, 100 Bullets, Loveless, Desolation Jones, Jack Cross, Life During Wartime, Fables, Matador, and Winter Men instead. Them's good funnybooks.

I really like the way it's going. I don't want Vision on the main team, and I'm kind of hoping he's appointed as a guardian of sorts to watch over the kids. But I too, am too happy with the New Avengers team as is, I'm actually kind of bummed they're changing the roster in January, especially since Spiderwoman is staying on the team. The only indisposable members right now are Spiderman, Iron Man, Cap, and Sentry if you ask me. I'd like Cage to stay too but they'll probably have him leave to take care of his baby or something, and Wolverine was pretty much put on the team as a joke in the first place.

Also, either I've been reading a different comic than someone, or I completely missed Wiccan and Hulkling actually being gay too. I think it might be that one of them is, but I don't think both of them.

There was a panel at Comicon this year: "Homosexual Characters in Comics."

The writer for Young Avengers was there, billed as the writer for Young Avengers. Not some other title he might have done with gay characters, but Young Avengers.

Both of them are gay. Go back through issues 1-6 and lookfor the subtle nuances..."You're the best." "No, you are." "No, you are." Hulkling literally going nuts over Billy disappearing in #6. The discussion of their relationship getting out to the public, and "Assgaurdian" being a problematic name.

They do everything except say it expkicitly.

Yeah, but don't all those books also require a previous investment in the storyline and characters...? That's my only quibble with your recommendations...and the fact that I'm not sure I could afford all those. :p

Not most of 'em. Desolation Jones and Silent Dragon are only on issue 4, Jack Cross and Winter Men are on 3, Loveless debuted this week, and Fables is very jump-on friendly.

Ex Machina is good enough to rationalize reading the first two TPB's to bring you up to speed, and 100 Bullets is just a masterwork.

Yeah, and that's the least fucked-up thing about the book. The guy who only eats four times a year? The suicidal chick with the creep-you-out pheromones? The porn industry expose' in issue 3? Brilliant... freaking... book.

If Ellis keeps up the pace, I very much think Desolation Jones has the chops to become the "Hellblazer" of this decade. It's beyond edgy, informative in ways you don't want to be informed, and just handled very cleverly all around.

    Great read.

Haven't read it. What issue is it on? Might have to try finding it.

AndI very very rarely start a book after I miss the first issues, unless of course it's in the couple hundred range.

I picked up the trade for the first arc, it was awesome, I haven't read a page turner like that since the first Ultimates.

    Kudos.

Issue 4 hit the shelves a week or two ago, so the series is very much still in its infancy. It kind of showed up under the radar (even though it's a Warren Ellis book, orders seemed to be kind of light), but given how new it is, tracking down the back issues shouldn't be tough.

Worst case scenario, wait until the inevitable 1st-Arc trade comes out, then start buying issue-to-issue. Believe you me, it's well worth it.

We keep getting cryptic little hints about some horrific process Jones went through called "The Desolation Test", which left him unable to sleep, emotionally numb, and able to kick tall fetish-gimps in the nuts in a single bound.

    Good, good stuff.

That there Ellis person posted a page of that on Scans Daily. A bunch of creepy guys in doctors robes torturing a poor sap.

Anyway. I'm glad comics on the whole is far, far away from this:
