Another crazy thing about Robotech is that the last new thing they created, the direct to video animated movie Shadow Chronicles, was pretty much plagiarized by the Yamato sequel released a couple years later, Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection. It's hilariously shameless. The entire Yamato sequel was misjudged to begin with, but why rip off such a hacky source?

Because with USA law if you have a license you have to use it or lose it after so much time, it was probably made just to keep the rights.

At least the Yamato team learnt from it mistake and brought out the reboot.

I have not seen Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection, but, if it is the exact same thing as Shadow Chronicles, but the least bit entertaining in anyway possible, than it is already a step up from what Harmony Gold made.

That was really the best you could do, wasn't it, Harmony Gold? lol

I thought Yamato resurrection was pretty good.

The sad thing is, it's not! It's abysmal. They completely abandoned any semblance of the old character design style so as not to get into legal trouble with Matsumoto, I guess, and the story is boring beyond belief. It has every bad point of Shadow Chronicles, plus is made 10x more sad by being an official continuation of the original continuity, while Shadow Chronicles at least only messes up a derivative property.

The Yamato reboot was a million times more entertaining, despite still being unnecessary, imo.

really...? What about it was the least bit good?

Honestly, I had little to no interest in it until just now. I'll have to check it out now. Now that I am getting these two entirely different opinions of it.

Considering that's only happened with like one movie ever, it's a pretty bad bet.

But, I haven't seen a whole lot of Yamato. In fact, I think I've only seen the English dub of it. (Which is like saying not seeing it all.) I probably should watch the rest of it first. So, it will take awhile. As I am currently trying to make my way through all that Captain Harlock stuff.

That was something else Harmony Gold fucked up, wasn't it? lol I've seen that dub of it.

Yeah, they tried to add singing to it, even, ala Macron One.

If you watch the original Yamato, the very most important thing to remember is to watch the original tv series (don't worry, it's short), and NOT the first movie which was made from the original series. The first movie is awful. It's a compilation movie made entirely from pieces of the first tv series. But while that worked beautifully for Gundam, in Yamato's case, they stripped it completely of its heart. It's just a series of cold events, with none of its emotional core whatsoever. And Yamato without its emotional core is nothing.

For the second series, both movie and tv series are fantastic, although this is the first (but not last) time the continuity branches. Series and movie cover the same threat to Earth, but with slightly different events along the way, and drastically different endings. In fact, the movie version (which I think is superior) actually ends that particular continuity. The second tv series (which was made after the second movie, rather than the other way around) is the version of the story that continues into later series and movies.

It gets complicated, but really, you can enjoy any of the old tv series or movies, even if they don't perfectly link up with each other due to branching continuities. Just don't watch that first compilation movie under any circumstances. It's soulless.

AKA Go Shogun, though I loved that opening theme.

At the time I was so happy about any new Yamato, it might have looked good to me. If I watch it again i would probably hate it.

If think people who have never seen Yamato should start with 2199, not the original version.

Yea, it will most definitely be the original series, not some mashup of the TV series into a movie. I usually hate that crap. But, yea, Yamato is one I've been meaning to watch. The original, not some remake/reboot.

Well, Peter Cullen sounds nice. lol I haven't heard of this one. But, I suspect that it's been edited to hell and back like everything else Harmony Gold has touched. I'llcheck out Go Shogun. I think I'll avoid Macron 1.

Maybe I will later. But, if I am going to watch Yamato, I am going to watch the original. (At least watch it first.) Not some modern remake. I'll watch the modern remake when I'm done with the original one of TV series and movies.

..and poor Srungle, which no one remembers. :(

GoShogun is fantastic, and the sequel movie is bizarre and phenomenal.

Yea, that animation alone looks really great. I'll look into it, and check it out for sure.

I am sure you will enjoy the original series. I still do. Yamato III is such a train wreck. I saw it once and I have avoided it since.

Well, I'll probably watch Yamato III at least once, once I get to it.
