OK, so you feel that XTB would charge you less because it costs them less.

I respectfully submit that XTB have recently had a tendency to find ways to charge silly prices for everything (selling the Gravestone trailer accessory pack separately, for example), and I suspect they're just as likely to market a gray version as "limited edition" and make it the same price (if not more) than the regular release. Higher profit for them.

I understand what you mean. I have notized an increase in prices during the corona period. And i have been angry many times over high prices.

Everything i previously wrote is based on if XTB would be fair in pricing. Only then could the price be cheaper. So this is pure speculation and my own opinion.

So if XTB would be fair, only exclusion of accessories from the content should already bring a price-reducing effect.

It’s fine, if your opinion is that the price might be even higher than the regular version. Of course you can have your opinion. It’s ok. There is nothing wrong with someone having an opinion on something. Everyone can have an opinion, at least one opinion per point. :)

Not to be difficult, but if XTB does not include accessories that may cost more! How? Sellers have those plastic trays and Styrofoam boxes to package the figure. Retailers really hate it when a company has empty spots in those plastic trays as they get accusations from customers that "I'm missing the XXX accessory". Retailers have to argue with customers that XXX was not included with the cheaper re-paint and the customer should have read the description more carefully. Retailers therefore hate when packaging has empty spots making it look like something is missing. Customers are "always right" and you don't want to argue with them. The "best practice" is to not make it look like pieces are missing when you package a toy. The solution is to re-tool the machine that makes the packing trays, but that costs money. Therefore it "may" be more economical just to include irrelevant accessories. Spending more to re-make packaging is all-new costs.

Plus there is inflation. Profit margins on re-releases should go up since tooling is already complete, but at the same time raw materials and labor are always, always going up. Plus the risk of getting stuck with an unpopular re-paint that does not sell. Smaller batches also drive up the price per unit. So how does a company like MMC or DX9 figure out a "fair price" for a repaint? If a company takes a bigger risk, isn't it fair that they also receive more profit? Otherwise there is no incentive to take risks. A limited-run with no paint and no accessories may end up costing more than the original release. A second release with even larger quantity of a very popular figure should in theory have a lower price if they are "fair". But why lower your price on a popular figure and leave money out there for scalpers?

There is a long history of prices going up, going down, or staying the same for re-releases. I try not to get overly concerned when that happens. None of these companies ever wants to share all their financials or explain their decisions as that tends to only make things worse. We can only guess at why things happen. Everyone's opinion is probably about 1% correct and the rest under-informed speculation. Mine included.

Yeah, like i said, pure speculation. And yeah, at least the box would need a new picture/s on it (picture/s from gray version). That would bring a little bit more costs, no doupt.

Anyway, after all this gray version will probably never even going to happen, but it’s always nice to speculate with things anyway.

Anyway, a little bit more speculation won’t make harm...

You already said that ”the customer should have read the description more carefully”, but...

Would it be good idea, if toy maker would use the original styrofoam, but would include note inside it which would read clearly enough ”does not include accessories”. :)  Would retailers still hate it? Or customers?

The "black foam" packaging is the best imo and it's easy to customize

The Zeta packing is solid as a rock. Those black foam packages are nearly uncrushable. I'm sure that's saved many a Superion and Bruticus getting getting "free shipping" across the Pacific.

You can see the difference with Constructor, with the foam at least it got to you in one piece, then you’d snap something. In the plastic trays they just show up broken. The foam is awesome!

Locke and Keith could be a rad reality show where a factory owner goes undercover in a subpar outsourced factory to find out who’s been misassembling all their puzzle robots. Like undercover Boss!

It actually sounds more like a Cartoon Network show with the usual ugly-drawn characters.

Keith catching himself in the act does sound appealing. Certainly a better concept than that show with replicators that @Fortynickel is trying to shill us with.
