I can't be the only one that thinks this actually looks better.

I don't have many hard lines with Ironhide and Ratchet, but having a broken up front window-chest is definitely one of them.

The real van has a tapered body that doesn't translate to Ironhide's boxy chest without some kind of transformation.

It's better in some ways but it also looks kind of squat....like he landed really hard with his rocket pack and got crunched down a little.

I get ya. Ideally I want an Ironhide that is in-between the MS Legend & what XTB is offering.

I've been wanting an upgrade to MP Ironhide for ages now, but this one needs more time in the oven. The face sculpt is way off, the gaps on the chest are an eyesore and the whole thing just comes across as an older design to me.

I know they can do better than this. I mean, we've just had their excellent version of Long Haul, and this just isn't good enough in comparison.

I was super excited to see the pics over the weekend.

But, then "it's X-Transbots" settled in. All of X-T's early renders look amazing (to me).

I had so many disappointing and frustrating experiences with KFC's and X-T's products that a couple of (few?) years ago, I set a rule to save my sanity: "only figures for whom there is little-to-no chance of someone else doing in MP size." I thought that would be all better.

Well, last year I bought Fioravanti; new product, same experience.

So, this one looks great, but not for me.

I really wanted to like it, unfortunately I'm not able to. The chest, the face, the pelvis... are all awful.
Basically XTB should redo 50% of the sculpt and I don't think that will happen, unfortunately.
I'll wait for another shot by some other company (like Transform Element)

Like many others I think Legends have managed better than this, which points to these being older designs. The best way I can describe the bot mode is inelegant - gappy, greebly and unfinished.

For now the only XTB product I'm interested in is the Omnibots - I got lucky with Fioveranti and he was pretty much perfect, but mainline characters like these will find their way to market via another company eventually.

While the robot mode of the Legends do a lot right, the vehicle mode heavily suffer for it, and Keith cares a lot about doing good looking realistic vehicles, even if it means sacrificing the robot node look to achieve it.

So do we know anything about how far along this guy (these guys?) are in production? What are the odds that XTB makes any significant changes to what we're seeing here?

Yes but it's 2024 who still cares for realistic vehicle mode? Maybe I'm in the minority but I never cared for real vehicles as they never were realistic vehicles in the toon. I couldn't care less for automotive logos and similar

Personally, I prefer toonish bot modes and realistic alt modes.

I quite enjoy the realistic (I prefer toy decoes over realistic decoes for alt modes) alt mode designs for Masterpiece figures.

Yeah same here. Just my preference. Reminds me of what MP used to stand for years ago.

I'm with the dudes that posted above - the realistic vehicle mode thing is pretty important to me.

I will say, though, gimmicks like seats, steering wheels, and opening hoods/doors aren't important to me and are needless complications to engineering, and in the case of XTB's Runabout, negatively affected the robot mode.

If they can engineer extra stuff like that without compromising anything, I'm fine with it. But most of the time it seems to cause issues elsewhere. And since they don't seem to give a shit about giving us decent figures to stuff in there anyway, it kinda seems pointless, lol.

I would say TakaraTomy has kept the edict of cartoon based robot modes and realistic vehicle modes. It's just they have to play ball with the license holders while doing so. Even the Choro-Q style Bumblebee (and that Cliffjumper in limbo) is accurate to the source material. And not to take anything away from Magic Square, as they are masters of their craft with their chosen building material, but they also one of the 3rd parties who openly borrow techniques from the official MP toys. Off the top of my head, their Hound, 2.0 Optimus, and Ironhide borrow heavily from the respective official MPs. They've also been keen to use the folding wheel technique from MP Hound on their Onslaught. The Ironhide is interesting because before the MP's innovative idea of rolling the van's read up into the front, stuff like Voodoo and the NA figure (which took Jizai's design) did things quite differently. X-Transbots appears to be going further by hiding the entirety of the van inside the upper body with a false front whose edges appear to fold away so it can hide in vehicle mode.

Yeah, that's a good point. If it's integrated in such a way that it doesn't bring down the experience in other ways, then that's fine. I will say, Hound would have looked odd without seats and a steering wheel, and those things didn't really cause problems with the transformation or bot mode on the TT figure.
