    Onward Christian soldiers!

Some people found it insensitive and out of place and by that reaction alone it was. Thankfully, it was unobtrusive so let's just leave it at that eh?

No hotel in Egypt would shout out an Islamic prayer over it's guests food (particularily western guests). They be out of business in six months, because people wouldn't come back.

Hosts who are taking money off their guests respect their guests customs, because otherwise they stop giving them money.

Already did. And I got a reply from him very quickly, saying he was glad I had a good time.

As for the rest of this subject, I'm just going to repost what I just wrote over there, since after eading the rest of this thread, it seems to fit pretty damn well (although to a lesser extent). So take what is appliccable.

First up, a quick word to those who have been having so much fun bashing Botcon without even being there:
Stop talking now. All you have to go on are other people's opinions; you have none of your own. You have no stories to tell, no considered opinions to give.
Considering the amount of time they had to plan it, I found Botcon to be very well run.
-The exclusives looked a LOT better than they did on the net (you DO allrealise that the first set of photos were Photoshopped, don't you?)
-The hotel was fantastic. Clean, spacious rooms; free booze every night; free net access in the foyer; free breakfast (and excellent food); good facilities; extremely helpful staff. nothing to complain about there.
-Panels: not the greatest selection in the world, but good enough for me. Of particular note were the unreleased toys panel, and the Hasbro preview panel.
-Re Brian Savage; this is a man with 10 years' experience of dealing with a different fandom, who has just started dealing with us. Of COURSE he is going to f*** up in some respects. ANYONE would. TIme will tell if he gets the hang of it or not, but to write him off after one event is stupidity. To be blunt, be damn thankful someone even tried to give us something; I dread to think how much whining there would have been if there was no Botcon at all.
-the before-dinner prayer; who CARES? It was a matter of seconds long. if you don't want to pray, don't pray. I didn't. See how that works? You're in Texas, chums; they dig God there. I mean, really; I would have been more surprised if there hadn't been someone saying Grace. Either way it certainly didn't "offend" me. So if this is someone's biggest complaint, they really should try harder.
-the meal itself; A choice would have been good; I will agree there. And not catering to vegetarians was a mistake. Incidentally, were there any vegetarians there? I would like to know what would have happened if someone had asked for a vegetarian option. The food was good, but a choice would have been nice (not to mention a good idea for medical reasons).
-Dealer room; small. Very small, in fact, compared with last year's. However, i got exactly the toy I went there looking for, and I made some very good contacts. So I was happy.

This was the first MC-run Botcon, and by the sounds of it, most of you would be over the moon if it was the last. It appears that very few people here are actually willing to give this crew a chance, and frankly I find that extremely sad.

The one thing people seem to be forgetting about conventionsis that in general they are social events.; people go as much to meet friends again, as to buy stuff and go to panels. THAT is what made the convention for me, getting teh chance to chill with some very good friends, and make some excellent new ones. that alone was worth flying from the UK for.

    This hurts

Check out how one of the Allspark members spoke to me Link

And this is how said member replied to me when I asked him to edit his post

All this because I don't have a problem with the Convention timing. And stated that it's not right to act like the whole fandom has a problem with it just because ONE board does :redface2:

And people wonder why I don't voice opinions. It's because in real life or on boards, SOME people don't respect me :redface2:  Even though I show the utmost respect

Why would you want the respect of a little PISSANT like that anyways??? Just brush it off dude... The only respect that's important are those of your friends and family... :thumb

The only reason I was surprised is because Im from the north east where the PC patrol has a lock down on all sorts of stuff like that during organized events. I didn't feel forced to pray at all. Its not as if someone held a gun to my head and forced me. Besides it was only ~10 seconds long. Its not as if they were holding up the food till the prayer was done. I had already devoured most of my salad when Brian started.

And they didn't glare at you for eating while they were in prayer??? I've always been afraid to start eating because they would glare at me...

But yeah, it's the same over here... It's very PC here...

It just holds true to my theory, Shaun_C, that once people have any degree of anonymity they act a lot "jerkier" than they would normally. The internet is definitely the pinnacle of this kind of activity. I think all the constructive criticisms and genuine complaints are a good thing. Email Brian Savage and MC all day long about things that you did not like about the convention. Really, please do, because otherwise there's no way any of it can be addressed. I mean, this is the first year MC has run the con, and there were some definite snafus (anytime this many people have a problem with something there has to be some manner of truth behind the complaints, and there were aspects of the convention that I didn't like as well). Truth be told, I'm really more interested in seeing how MC responds to all the complaints and how well next year's con is run.

Exactly. it's a pretty pathetic reason to get pissy over, IMO.
    Mine was already gone.
Shaun, I wouldn't give a toss about the opinions of someone who acts like that. Brush it off the way you'd brush off bird crap, m8. Besides, you know full well he probably wouldn't say sh*t in person.

[edit] Looks like he's one of the people who didn't go, and is basically reiterating what everyone else there whined about. WHAT a shpck.

Then again, at the other extreme, there are some people that would find pleasure in a TF convention even if they drove safety pins into your eyeballs as part of the registration process.

I swear just as soon as I start thinking - Ok, maybe next year I'll go if I can simply attend and get a toy - everything just goes to the crapper again. Case in point:

Prayer at the meal - Bible belt not withstanding, that was just a wee bit insensitive (if not a bit of a grandstanding gesture)

Single selection meal - I've been to many professional conferences of a similar size and never had this kind of problem. This shows a real lack of caring for your attendees.

The insult to TF Fans by Savage - Tactless and stupid, whether it was done in jest or not. So terribly sorry we're not your precious GI Joe fans, Mr Savage. Amazing that there's just as much evidence of "whining" that they do as the TF Fandom, but we're the ones at the butt of your tasteless humor.

Casino Night - Nice to see this was the waste of convention money and time I thought it would be. Evidently, MC has no idea how these work either - "you got this little coupon, and you could trade it in for either a set of chips at one of the card tables or for slots tokens; but not a mix, which seemed unneccessarily limiting." I've never been to a Casino Party where they limited you this way. Why bother giving the attendee "free" money if they can spend it only one way?

"Weak" Dealer Room - kind of expected that considering how expensive it was for dealers to be there and the possibility of low attendance translating into poor sales.

Art "table" - This was the saddest part to read for me. The Art displays and auctions were always a great part of Botcon for me personally. No, I'm not an artist myself but appreciate the work that TF fanartists do and I had the wonderful luck of winning a great piece of work at one of the Botcons I was able to attend. The lack of attention this part of the fandom received at this year's Botcon really personally shows a complete lack of caring by MC for the fans.

What really hurts the most about all this is that in all likelyhood, none of this will probably change next year.

Dammit, they just need to hold the damned convention next year in Vegas next to a Church/Synagogue/Temple/Cathedral with a vegan optioned meal, a mile long dealer room and free cash for the casinos...

Oh, and strippers... Lots of strippers!!! And teachers for the kids!!! Or teachers dressed as strippers!!! Or strippers dressed as teachers!!!

I'm not religious, and I eat meat. Does that mean I can bitch about it? Even if I don't even go? Can I? Can I?

By the way; does anyone know who the blue fuck that "Chip" twunt is? Or, for that matter, why I should give a shit about his smartarse (not to mention unwarranted and downright fucking rude) reply?

Ahhh, good to see this thread getting back on a good track again. :D  Yeah, I've definitely moved to the right board...

Anyways, yeah, there were a few legitimate complaints about the convention, but that's what that HUGE evaluation packet you were supposed to turn in was for. (I mean, I spent at least a solid hour filling that thing out! Woo!) I doubt they'd spend all the time typing out that huge thing and then not take any common complaints under advisement for next year. 'Sides, I talked with Brian for a bit after the Club panel-- he seems like a pretty nice guy. :thumb

I bet you his real name is Chip. Other than that, I dunno.

Twunt... I'm gonna hafta remember that word...

    THANK YOU!!!!! :thumb  :rock

It’s about bloody time someone put this in perspective.

As someone who was at the con I must say I had an absolute blast. This having been my 7th Botcon/(OTFCC) I can also say that though this was not one of the best TF cons I'v ever been to it defiantly was not one of the worst. I had lots of fun just meeting so many new people outside of my regular TF circle especially from these boards. I just wish I could have spent more time talking and socializing with people again especially from these boards.

And in regards to this whole prayer stuff I have to say WTF is the big deal here people? I mean I look at these people over at Allspark and so forth and these people acting like they have been violated in the worst possible means, this is just pathetic. Yes maybe a moment of silence would have been more appropriate for the occasion but I think were just making too much of an ordeal out of this whole affair don’t ya think? Its not like they were ramming down our throats or anything it was like a 10-15 seconds I think people are just blowing this thing waaaay out of proportion.

All in all were there problems? Sure there was. Was the con perfect? No of course not. But what is important is that I had a damn good time and I know a lot of people I met there did as well and in the end isn’t that whets really important. I flew all the way from Lennoxville Quebec Canada to go to this years con and let me tell you something it cost a lot of money for me and my brother to go, I worked my butt off this summer to afford this think AND I took time off school which is also very important to me to go to this thing and let me tell you right now I would do it again and again and again, as it was that good and worth every penny.

At any rate that’s all I have to say about this. Oh ya and I found a GF Soundwave and Prowl so again all is well with the world :D
