Since we're talking about the deaths of Jazz and Ironhide.
Not necessarily. In "Starscream's Brigade" from G1, Starscream breaks into the Decepticon Vault on Cybertron to steal the "personality components" (the concept of "spark" was yet to arrive) of the Combaticons - supposedly prisoners of Megatron. Starscream then put them into the dilapidated, ruined vehicles on Guadalcanal and PRESTO! Rusted out Shermans, Zeroes, and Jeeps turn into sparkly new Combaticons! (love G1 logic )
In "Spotlight: Arcee", the Garrus-9 prison run by Fortress Maximus is displayed as holding several sparks as prisoners in containers separate from their bodies.
So, there's precedents for it in TF fiction.
Edit: Of course, the movie universe may have different rules, as Split Lip points out.
But the movies are not other TF fiction. In other fiction, getting torn in half is survivable, but in the movies they're much more "realistic" with how much damage the robots can take. Likewise the spark in the movies is not the core of a TFs brain and power source, but rather much more like a heart. Removing it will not preserve the individual, since it has nothing to do with their mind.
Yeah, that was kind of weird.
At least Sam/Mary should have told Optimus Ironhide was killed, at least.
There were many things in DotM that were cheesier than that.
I disagree. If some douche-bag had killed my second-in-command, I would have acknowledged it before I shot him.
You're absolutely right, now that I think of it. Otherwise there would've been a way to bring Jetfire back in RotF.
I kinda thought it would be cool if Prime, in a mocking, sarcastic kinda tone, said "I hereby discharge you from duty", before shooting SP with the rust cannon. I just wish that thing got more use...
Well, Prime most likely saw Ironhide's remains while driving into NEST HQ.
It did in the original script and book, you know. Optimus used to kill Sentinel in the end of those versions.
It sounds like when some of these threads are made. Is to justify the Death of a Character. You want some sort of "end" or "closing" for the passing of said character. I did fell bad for his death but, as others have said it would have killed the moment at the end.
Ironhide was unaprreciated when he dies.
If he said THIS. Then it would of fit the moment with an appropriate quote that also justifies Ironhide.
"Like you once said to my autobot brother. I hereby discharge you of duty. BLAM"
That would fit the tone and fit the mood much better, without sounding lame.
I would have liked him to say, with fury in his voice, "You didn't just betray me, you betrayed everything you stood for. You betrayed Ironhide; you betrayed the people of this city. You brought this on yourself." Then the twin shotgun blasts.
Optimus: "You betrayed yourself"
Sentinal: "NO OPTIMUS!"
Optimus: "As my old friend would've said, "Punk ass" Autobot!"
