this is not bullshit,i have read that at one point optimus prime wasn't going to die and after learning of unicrons existence and that he was on course for cybertron optimus learns that cybertron in a robot itself (could be primus) and that the matrix of leadership is a key that can merge the holder and the giant robot together to fight off unicron, at this point unicron was also made by the quintasons

edit: i was wrong about optimus merging with primus but the matrix was originally like the omega lock. here is the page

    http://tfwiki.net/wiki/The_Secret_of_Cybertron

"The Secret of Cybertron" was a proposed script by writer Flint Dille and creative director Jay Bacal, hastily produced in a week after they read Ron Friedman's original draft for The Transformers: The Movie and deemed it "incoherent." Although hugely proud and excited about the script they had created, Dille and Bacal were disappointed to discover that executive producers Joe Bacal and Tom Griffin did not share their enthusiasm, and "The Secret of Cybertron" was promptly "filed away."

Details on the story of "The Secret of Cybertron" remain minimal, as the script is lost to the mists of time - Dille believes he may own a copy, but has yet to uncover it. It is believed that at least some aspects of the story made it into the completed movie, although Dille describes the finished feature as "such a Frankenstein of different drafts and ideas and people" that he cannot remember which elements, if any, originated in his and Bacal's script. What is known, though, is that "The Secret of Cybertron" originated the idea of the Quintessons as the creators of the Transformers, which Dille later revived for "Five Faces of Darkness".

As pieced together from different interviews with Dille, the story would have allegedly involved Optimus Prime embarking on a quest to discover the origin of the Transformer race. The titular "secret" would have been that Cybertron itself was a giant robot, and the planet would have been transformed by the Matrix of Leadership to fight Unicron, who was in this draft a weapon apparently created by the Quintessons, intentionally setting up a "brotherly" dynamic between the two planets years before Simon Furman got the idea into his noggin.

That's basically the plot for Transformers: Cybertron / Galaxy Force, sans the Quintessons. So they did eventually get some mileage out of it.

But eh, Im happy with how the original movie turned out, I guess.

No I would not have liked this. I like what we got and yearn for Rodimus Prime to be as popular as Optimus.

I doubt that story would have had nearly the lasting effect that Primes death had. I also have a hard time visualizing what two planet sized robots fighting in space would have looked like in 1986. They already had a hard time showing Unicrons scale as it was.

Unicron being made by the Quints = absolute garbage.

Movie ending with Primus versus Unicron = pure gold that really should've happened.

As a 9 or 10 year old kid at the time, I probably would have liked whatever they did with the movie. I loved the original when it came out and it wasn't until years later that I realized how much I hate the Quintesson angle. I think the Primus thing is one of THE single stupidest concepts of TF fiction, but back in the 80's, I would have accepted it.. because we sort of had to take whatever we were given due to numerous different continuities not existing as they do now o pick & choose from.

I could've gone for two planet-sized robots fighting to the death at the climax of the movie.

No. That idea is too wild, even for the 80s.

The Cybertron is a giant robot idea does seem a out there for the time considering how up-in-arms parents were over characters getting killed. However, as previously mentioned, I probably would have liked it as a kid since Optimus Prime would have lived and someone familiar would have been present with all these new bots (assuming Ironhide and the rest of the crew was killed off).

I do like Rodimus Prime but I would have preferred more of a build-up like what they're doing in IDW comics right now showing Rodimus as someone to be reckoned with and can run with the big dogs. As the movie now stands, he's just thrown in there with no real backstory along with Arcee, Springer, Ultra Magnus, and Kup though Kup has the most backstory of the group bia his war stories.

There's also a part of me that prefers Unicron being built by the Quintessons rather than Primacron. It would have made them far more of a credible threat to the Transformers race.

It's garbage but it would have been better than Primacron.

I would have liked it if most of the original cast survived in particular Optimus Prime.
