Would a "live-action" Transformers TV series really work? And how?

Interesting bit of speculation here. Id be curious to see a live action TF series, but for all of the limitations most of you have already mentioned, I have a feeling that even if it was produced, I'd likely still be an animation only guy.

If Transformers is so G1-oriented nowadays, I have an idea. How about a suitmation based show that emulates Toku shows of the 80s past?

The market these days is very nostalgia oriented. If Hasbro could produce a live action remake of G1 in the style of 80s Toku (suitmation, explosions, laser effects, fighting on quarries) I think it would sell both to the mainstream market and the group of fans among us that grew up on G1.

I've always wanted a live-action Transformers show called End of the Road where everyone turns into cars and only cars - but no supercars, only good street cars - homaging Alternators, (also not needing huge trucks, tanks, helicopters, etc for props would be easier on the budget) a small cast and designs as detailed as in TFP, set in between California and Nevada with smaller-scale battles leaning closer to Fast & Furious style race-fight combat. I think that'd be a good way to do Transformers as a live-action series.

In my opinion that's definitely the way to go. The concept of the series has proven it has many advantages over the theatrical films but only if done right. It gives much more opportunities to develop characters and their story arc. But as many of you have already mentioned it's gonna have to focus on a very small robot cast due to the obvious reasons and will most likely have to compensate with more human screen time. But I think as long as the storytelling is great it has a chance. I'm definitely towards "yes".

I always wanted a tv series of Cybertrons origins before Sentinel crashed onto the moon.

I keep saying I'd love a spinoff where Brains and Wheelie form a detective agency with Simmons trying to weasel his way into it as well. A TV show would be a great avenue for this.

It's a spinoff series made by Takara; see, back in the late 80s when Season 3 of the G1 cartoon was winding down, Hasbro and Takara started diverging pretty significantly in terms of what stories they wanted to tell and how to tell them. Hasbro wrapped up the US cartoon with "The Rebirth," while Takara created an entire sequel show called "The Headmasters," which "Super God Masterforce" was a spinoff of. Both the Hasbro and Takara stories focused on the Headmaster, Targetmaster, and Powermaster character, with the Pretenders thrown in with Masterforce. But in the US, the head/target/power masters were all separate characters from their larger partners, while in Japan the headmasters and powermasters were the characters, while the larger, full-sized Transformer bodies were basically lifeless mech suits.

No. You can't do Transformers on a TV budget.

What about a show where there’s a single transformer who remains in alt mode for most of the series, maybe have it finally transform as the season one finale? Hint at it being a robot and have guns pop out and stuff. Hell, it could even be Diaclone if you wanted, a blue-bluestreak datsun who has a penchant for killing mobsters or something.

Make do with the fact they don’t have the budget for big stuff, so start off with small stuff- one robot, one town.

If they do a show then it should take place in between DOTM and AOE. Maybe show some battles with the KSI and Bumblebee. The story will center around Bumblebee and Mudflpa and Skids will be in it too. At the end they sacrifice themselves for Bumblebee. They should also have wicked new deception characters that are like bandits in the desert. Many scenes with action and the KSI and decepticons. I just want to see Mudflaps teeth again. These are just my ideas and I think a series could work.

It could be done - hell, I could even see it airing on HBO or something. But do the fans REALLY want it?

Any live action Transformers series will likely require a huge budget, even if it's mostly humans, which it will likely be. Whatever the budget, it's likely that you don't see a whole lot of robot action anyway - longer form shows have to pace out their storytelling into slower, more character-based affairs, which means lots of scenes of robots, humans, or robots and humans talking.

Now for me, the one weirdo who wants to see someone turn a series of toy commercials from the 80's into serious dramatic art, I would lose my goddamn mind to see that. But be honest - is that REALLY what a lot of Transformers fans want? Even the adults, cause kids wouldn't care, but the people who grew up with it? Would that be what they want to see, even if it was a one-off thing?
