I don't usually post on this board, but damn.

Poachers Kill Famed Giant Kenyan Elephant - NDTV

Why would something like this happen? Are we really so unable to protect our own wildlife? Why can't we be more careful or less bloodthirsty?

Would the news be any less horrible if it was a baby elephant?

They were after the Ivory, sadly its likely he was a victim of his own fame. Ivory is still in high demand in China and other parts of the far east.
That said the poachers should be shot with their own arrows.

Adult elephants are the ones with tusks, aka, the primary reason they are poached. What's your point?

I think his point is that this one particular elephant death is no more important then any of the other elephants that are killed for their tusks.

And I agree, it's sad that this particular elephant has been killed but it's sadder that so many of these animals are killed for pure monetary gain. It's not even that they're being killed for a small part of their bodies, even if their bodies were all used it'd still be sick.

On UK TV there's a 2 part TV series which is focusing on an abandonned whaling station on the island of South Georgia, fascinating for the abandonned outpost but so so tragic and sad that the magnificent animals of the sea were brutally hunted to near (and actual) extinction for the same thing that is happening to these Elephants... money.

It's just sad that humanity never seems to learn.

Because some one will pay them for it and the poachers are much more well armed and funded than the park rangers they send out to watch the animals.

I had seen it on some documentary at some point about how few rangers they actually have and what crazy amount of military armaments those poachers have.

Not a good reason but that's why, same story as most governments they just don't have enough money to deal with what's going on.

Some people would be as upset about us killing animals for mass consumption.

Close enough. My point is that this example of poaching is featured based on the size of the elephant's body. It's terrible no matter which elephant is killed.

True, but for the bigger ones it's like you came all that way, lived that long, got that big...just to be shot and killed when all is said and done. It's tragic.

Many people ARE upset about it. I struggle with this myself...I value the lives of all animals. There is a difference, though. Animals that are raised to provide food that are treated properly and killed humanely (which is an even bigger problem) are different from animals in the wild (often endangered) that are slaughtered so the Chinese can have some dumbass trinkets.

It's the whole "endangered species/getting close to near extinction" part that sets the situation apart and makes it different all together. Being angry over cow or chicken farms and eating them isn't on par with the morality of hunting down an animal species to its eternal death. Apples and oranges discussion-wise.

    -----

Pretty sure no one condoned the killing of ANY size or age of ANY elephant, so the additional point is a bit moot. In fact, I'll go so far as to say if this was a "Baby Elephant Slaughtered by Poachers" article, the reaction would be even more harsh towards the poachers than what you see right now.

This just makes me sad that we'd go through any lengths just to hunt animals for certain body parts... It sickens me to my heart.

This is pretty fucked up, and really the reason why I'll never take "hunting" in positive light when done in terms of things other than food/survival/etc.
