I was going to make a Doctor Who joke as if you get rid of the hat that could work as a Doctor’s outfit.

Looks good. Here's hoping we get a Gene Wilder interpretation and not anything Depp did, or a third iteration of said character.

I take back my previous response. Clearly he's dressing like Gonzo from a muppet Christmas carol

So, Timothee Chalamet doesn't look bad. Hopefully he plays the part well and this film is better than the Depp film.

Other than the GOOD DAY, SIR meme and nostalgia, is there any reason the Wilder interpretation is considered so great? If you take nostalgia out of the mix, I don't know that it's all that much closer to the novel than Depp's movie.

I mean, I will say I think Wilder's is a better kids movie for sure. But beyond that, I don't know.

What Wilder had was the the timing, and the way he could dead pan a scene then suddenly show intense emotion. It also often came of as natural even in the most absurd places. You felt like it was natural, not like he was acting, or as these days over acting. He had a nonchalance that many actors these days lack.

Wilder was a fantastic actor, no question. I was just talking about in terms of being an adaptation of the book.

I think the first part is what people who say they prefer Wilder's version are commenting on. He was a fantastic actor and his portrayal of the character is pretty memorable for most people. I don't think many actually care about the faithfulness to the book since most people I've talked to that grew up watching the film actually never bothered to read it. Which, frankly, isn't that uncommon.

Sure, but then that's just nostalgia talking.

Honestly, not in my case. I still watch that movie and find it enjoyable. I do not have the same enjoyment out of watching the new film. I'm sure there are some people who enjoy it but it certainly wasn't my cup of tea. Maybe it's less nostalgia and more some people like different things than others.

When something is done well people remember and like that version. Doesn't matter if it's the original or sequel, they like the better version. When it turns our well and is very popular it will always be what any new version is compared to. As it will have to live up to and justify why it's being made when we already have this great version out there.

ngl seeing that Rowan Atkinson is in this movie but he's not Wonka makes a bit sad, i think he'd be a really fun choice for the whimsical chocolatier.
