This character is based on the Heroes Of Cybertron OTCC 2003 exclusive "Air Warrior" figure that came packed with the classic Seekers.

 

Let this be the event that spills the beans on Armada Optimus Prime properly this time...

 

Would be funny if the rumored seeker 2-pack for Earthrise is just two of the generic purple seeker. lol

Well, in this case soft vinyl figure or "sofubi" are highly popular in Japan, and the idea is that they have always been designed in that style. It's like a Power Rangers show where all monsters are style guys in costumes no matter how modern the show is. So this is not new for the Japanese market. As an extra bit, this character is based on the Heroes Of Cybertron OTCC 2003 exclusive "Air Warrior" figure that came packed with the classic Seekers, as stated in the official Youtani Shouten Instagram.

That's because Power Rangers (or rather, Super Sentai) is limited in budgets and production times and have monsters be guys in suits by necessity. I'm sure given more money they could make CGI monsters but that's not really possible when you have less than a year to film and produce an entire 50-ish episode TV show.

Sofubi I get, but these aren't Sofubi. They're neither the style nor finish of vinyl figures, which are simple of course, but not so dumpy and shitty looking. They're usually reasonably detailed for the material, lacking in paint apps but sculpted in suitably neutral-but-not-wooden poses rather than looking like a plank of wood.

This is more like one of those terrible "retro" action figures that are ridiculously overpriced despite looking like crud. Like the sculpt is so poor and the plastic is so cheaply glossy.

In the case of Sentai, it's not a matter of budget since most modern shows do ahve CGI and better effects. The costumes are part of the "magic" of those shows. Sofubi are just the generic name for any soft vinyl figure. If you check other Youtani Shouten figures they are all similar in style. As I said, I personally don't like it very much, but they have their public. Here in Latin America people pay crazy prices for Jumbo figures of Mazinger Z characters that look like piñatas he he he. I suppose there's a market for everything.

No, it absolutely is. Sentai is a children's show even more than Power Rangers is, with a low budget compared to other modern Japanese productions. Sentai does use CGI, quite often, and it's terrible. Monster costumes allow no "budget" per episode to use beyond actor wages, so they can appear as often as they want and on set with hardly any post production work. Kamen Rider, for example, uses CGI as well, and despite being higher budget is still awful looking and used as supplementary effects to standard suit monsters and costumes. Again, because they don't have the budget or time, not because suit monsters are the best alternative.

Costume monsters are absolutely a staple of Tokusatsu, but it's a staple born of necessity. Given an unlimited budget and time I'm sure they could make every MOTW completely photo-real CGI over mo-caped actors, but it's not practical to use CGI given their restraints when a suit monster gets the job done for a fraction of the cost.

Like I said, cheap crap cashing in on nostalgia. You can give it whatever name or justification you want, but nobody is buying these things based on their actual merits. Typical Sofubis like the one I posted are also very inexpensive to buy, and typically represent every character in a show unlike other lines. If they were of equal price and availability to, say, SHF or even standard action figure lines I can guarantee nobody would be buying them for their actual quality and design.

 

Does the head comes off to remove the shampoo ?

 

I'm hoping for a conehead and Slipstream but I'd be okay with this aswell.
