The attention to continuity is another thing I love about this show. That’s a very well done and poignant reference to The Karate Kid Part 2 (which is very underrated in my opinion for further exploring Mr. Miyagi’s character and not just being a retread of the first film). The Karate Kid Part 3 is ridiculously over-the-top, but it’s respectable that they decided to keep it in canon. So many properties these days wipe the slate clean when they don’t necessarily have to.
I love the hell out of Karate Kid II and III. It's The Next Karate Kid and the non-remake that I dislike. I wonder however if Hillary Swank could show up in Cobra Kai or even Jackie Chan as Mr. Han to make that movie canon in universe.
That’s all due to Ralph Macchio. I’ve seen him mention in a few interviews that’s why it’s taken so long to do anything with the property. He didn’t want to do anything if it wasn’t done right and didn’t respect the established continuity. At least someone in Hollywood gets it.
Johnny is awesome. Love how un-PC he is. Bringing more honor to Cobra Kai then under Reese all with keeping up the badassness. LOL how he is still thinking like the 80's telling those kids to bring their checkbooks.
I love how Johnny is more noble, but still an asshole. He has no problem with karate being used to kick someones ass, but he doesn't want cheap shots. Fight fair, but kick their ass. This series is so well done.
I read that too and also saw a YouTube video talking about it. I'd be fine with it since I normally watch YT vids on my computer with adblocker on Just rewatched this today:
I recently binge-watched the entire first series and loved it. They've done a very good job of showing that people aren't inherently good or bad, and that both Johnny and Daniel can be both supportive and total dicks. A lot of nice references to the original films in there as well. The whole 'illegal kick to the face' thing made me laugh, although it is then used again later in the series! If there's one thing I don't like it's the character arcs for two of the younger leads, as they're changes in behaviour appear too extreme and out of established character, but then I guess that is the show's way of showing the effects a mentor can have on an impressionable mind (even if it is a bit heavy-handed). In a way I'm glad I waited this long to watch it, as season two is right around the corner.
Watching S2E1 now. "We have to go to Hawk's house and watch some movie called Over the Top." Dear god i love Johnny being stuck in the 80s
