I am curious to know what is the appeal of the city commander add on for Classic Ultra Magnus. While it does provide a trailer and bulky robot form of UM, it is "parts former" and the part forming seem kinda complicated based on video reviews I have seen. So why the love for it?

if you owned it you would understand. its great. bought mine way way back in 2008 when it was first released and still love it now. it just makes ultra magnus into ultra magnus. pure and simple.

sure over the time it doesnt impress everyone but honestly i like it a lot.

Like RID Optimus Prime... It's nothing unusual. Partsforming sucks when parts have to put aside to go from one mode to another. In this case, all parts have a purpose in both modes. That's why it rocks.

I have it, and tbh, I think it's over rated.

But, it fills in the void in the collection.

Because to most people(me included) Ultra Magnus is a partsformer. Think about the comic he bust out of his armor and exposes the "White Optimus". Not to mention his original toy was based on a cab of a truck merging with is trailer forming an armored robot Honestly it isn't that complicated at all of a transformation either. Personally I love my City Commander and I'm glad I got it.

    Why is that bad?

It gave collectors a "proper" Ultra Magnus instead of a "White Optimus." It's not a perfect release, it does the job it set out to do.

Considering that your only other real alternative for a G1-inspired Ultra Magnus that has both the inner robot and the body armor is plugging him into the back, (i.e. the original G1 toy or its reissues,) parts-former is just fine for me.

And he's not that complicated. He's far easier to transform than most of Hasbro's recent efforts.

John Redcorn: Parts-forming is not as bad as sleeping - and having a son - with Dale Gribble's wife.

I love my city commander armor, and it basically was the first big 3rd party item to happen, the boom of 3rd party started with the release with city commander

it looks nice in bot mode (decent in trailer mode). So until someone (3rd party or official) comes out a better classics or MP UM this will be the best classics UM available that is not just a white OP repaint.

Because it looks awesome on my shelf, especially when upgraded (with Dr. Wu face-plate, iGear weapon packs, and Perfect Effect backpack). There are no real options or alternatives for a G1/IDW-inspired modern (articulated) take on the character in his size point (FoC UM is way too small, RiD/BH UM is the Prime style, etc.). He may be a partsformer and he may be a bit brick-ish but damn does he look good standing there posed with the rest of the (Classics) Wreckers/TFTAM cast.

If only they up-scaled Titanium G1 Ultra Magnus. That's one way to successfully ditch the Vanilla Prime aspect, which isn't for everyone. I briefly handled City Commander and was fairly impressed, but never got around to purchasing it.
