Let me just call Robert Kirkman real quick and ask.

Maybe he likes the character? I dunno, is there really a reason anyone has to like someone? Maybe he likes the evolution of the character and the hero's journey? Maybe he likes that he's a more unsure, imperfect leader compared to Optimus? Maybe he thinks he looks cool?

 

All of use have our own unique reasons for liking one character more than another. You’ll have to ask him about it to understand his reasons as none of us are going to know.

Probably the same reasons as other fans of the character?
Look the '86 movie is far from perfect. And the season following it? Absolutely all over the place.

But here. Lets take a look at Hot Rod's character.

His story is a classic hero's journey. He's the young, brash hero who grows into a leading role. He blames himself for the death of the previous hero and constantly compares himself to him, always second guesses his decisions and makes some pretty bad choices multiple times. Hot Rod/Rodimus is a deeply flawed character who struggles a lot with guilt and imposter syndrome.

Robert Kirkman's most noteworthy character is Mark Grayson, Invincible. Mark is...Young, brash, and gets knocked down a lot for his troubles. He struggles with making the right decisions throughout the ongoing storyline of his comics. I get the feeling the flawed protagonist who struggles with their demons heavily resonated with Kirkman and influenced his own work.

 

Because hot rod is cool and awesome but like everyone have their favorite color or number with no reason why. It is the same thing as liking a character

I can only assume it is because he has really bad taste. But it is also possible that he had a psychotic episode when asked.

Not being sarcastic in any way, but did you mean this as in “why would you say such a thing?” or as in “is this really true?” kind of way.

Because he looks cool and well what's been stated already everyone's got their character they love and he's an interesting character (good connection to Invincible also that is very true). Ask him if you want to know cause we aren't going to be able to tell you.

I think he likes him because he looks cool (which is undeniably True). And maybe the whole young hero learning to be better by constantly getting L's is kind of his thing (ever read invincible, that poor kid is the embodiment of suffering).

 

I just had to look up who Robert Kirkman even is as I don't keep up with the comics industry.
Does he have a twitter or something where you can just ask him directly? Does he ever attend conventions or other Q&A type affairs? If not, this one might just have to remain a mystery until the man himself makes an official statement on the matter.

 

Because Hot Rod/Rodimus is the best G1 character? Obviously.

Robert kirkman was just your everyday comic writer. He enjoyed doing everything that mary sues enjoy. One day he was walking to buy the newest Rodimus toy. Rodimus was his favorite after all. When suddenly, a red sports car with gold flames and a gold spoiler nearly ran him over! He fell backwards and hit his head. When he woke he was no longer is normalville, but in the world of one of his comics! He looked around. How did this happen? Am I dead? He asked himself. Suddenly the red and gold racer was coming down the street. "Hey you!" He yelled. The car stopped, and in a whirl of movements transformed into a robot! They locked eyes and knew they were soulmates. The end.
