    ***Spoiler Alert***

Que could have been easily replaced with Ratchet instead. Even the death scene would have been extremely dramatic if it was Ratchet, not some unknown. I think Ratchets death would have added to the overall urgency and darkness of the movie. Instead they introduce Que and make Ratchet virtually useless throughout the whole trilogy.

I was just glad Ratchet got to be Optimus' moon-buddy. :D

Mm you do have a point there. Would've been even an even more depressing scene, because we've known Ratchet (admittedly not that well) over the duration of 3 movies. Que only had 3 scenes in which he spoke, and overall I think he appeared in robot mode in the background for 2 more scenes.

Ratchet was more of a field medic than a scientist. Combat was second nature. Wheeljack didn't seem the type to fight back so his pleading made it an, overall, more emotional death.

I liked him. He was a cool character, and I felt really bad when he died. As bad as I felt when Prowl and Ironhide died in the original movie. It was a brutal death for a bot who was willing to help anyone. He made it possible for the humans to have a weapon against the cons.

I too agree, although those weapons he developed did kinda come out of nowhere but that was more about limited characterization and screen time. I'm sure there might have been a cut scene where he's working on them, possibly with said items blowing up in his face :D

We already had Ironhide die, and if they killed off Ratchet too, that could have been too much for the audience, losing two characters who have been there since the beginning of the movieverse.

I think that was the point the OP was trying to make.

True, but I think from a director or writer standpoint, they wanted a character who was new die so that they could move on with the action faster.

If they killed Ratchet instead I would have been saddened. A lot.

Kind of like how we lost Starscream and Megatron? Starscream has had more screentime and dialog than Ratchet.

I thought Q dying was fair. Autobots lost one old and one new character.

Not really, since the story is told from the POV of the Autobots, and the intent of the director and writer is to get the audience to not like the Decepticons.

    1) To sell toys
    2) To have another new robot in the film

I'm glad they included Q. He didn't do that much, but when he was on screen he made use of his screentime. His death, I think everyone agrees, was really sad.
Keep in mind, he's not Ratchet. Ratchet's a medic, Q's an inventor. He actually did have a purpose too- he made the weapons that Sam uses to take out Starscream. Then, his death makes the audience hate the Decepticons even more.

Ratchet has never been shown inventing or creating wepaons, so it was probably more credible to bring in a new character and introduce the audience to him, helped by his design.

:lol  But seriously, I am glad that Ratchet was able to join Optimus on that little mission. It may have been short, with not a whole lot of interaction, but boy was that scene cool! :D  Some more lines from Ratchet regarding 'stasis lock' or 'loss of energon' or whatever would've been neat. Something to show his medic-side.

    :lol

Do I think that Ratchet could've filled Que's role? Kind of. To a certain extent, maybe. Do I think Que was cool in the little time he got? Oh yes. Could Ratchet's death have added an extra gravitas to the movie? Yes. But I would've rather not had Ratchet go out* like Que did. *On that note, I :lol  when the 'Cons were holding the Autobots prisoner and they were shoving Ratchet around. He got all "old man"-like and was like "Get off of me!" and he fell to the ground. You cannot contain Ratchet!
