Why don't companies make demos anymore?

Back in my day, (which is ten years ago) companies used to release demos. Try a game out for free! That's awesome! Maaaaaan. The demo for TMNT: 1989 arcade was badass!
Sometimes the demos are so fun, you'll wanna replay them over, and over again!
But for some reason, demos kinda stopped. Why? I could blame this on a company's greed, but that's not fair.
Demos left an impression on a game. Nowadays, you have to either rely on open betas, Kiosks (which may or may not be covered in boogers,) or the internet to get an impression on a game.
Some companies still do it. Like Nintendo... be honest, when was the last time Microsoft released a demo for the Xbox One.
I don't know why, any ideas?

They still make demos... They just stopped making Demo DISKS.

Yeah, i kinda do miss demos though, considering that they basically make you try out games like you said.

But what i miss about Demo Disks is that those things were that HUGE samplers of stuff. They even had some unreleased content/ notable differences you don't usually find in the final build in the game, which makes things more interesting. They sorta make this sorta small playable bit of an in-development version of the game before in the past. So that's one reason why i miss those.

What do you think "P.T." was?

Unless someone owned a PS4 during the relatively short period in which PT was available (thank you, cunts at Konami), it's likely they didn't get to experience "PT".
Besides which, the project for which PT was supposed to be a demo was cancelled, prompting a certain now-former Konami Wunderkind to leave and tell his former bosses (in no uncertain terms) to go fuck themselves. Leading indirectly to the development and release of Death Stranding.

Well, yes, Silent Hills never materialized, but that was an extreme circumstance. It was the best example of a demo I could think of.

I find it funny when demos requires you to be a PS Plus subscriber.
Like demo games from Ubisoft or EA games.

It's just freakin' demo. Why require a person to be a PS plus client.

Haha, I was thinking that too.

Sorry, @TheWarPathGuy , when you’re that young you don’t get to say “back in my day” ;)

    Now, back in MY day...
I played games on my Atari 2600 and my Nintendo Game & Watches. Primitive, blocky graphics, limited LCD displays, and we LIKED it.
    Grumble grumble...GET OFF MY LAWN!
    Frickin frackin kids...

But seriously, GOD I’m so old.

I just want to point out the 10 hour demo for DQ XIS on the switch.

Also, a lot of people don't release demos anymore because it actively hurts sales, and or eats up un-necessary costs.

Seeing this thread, I immediately thought of the Final Fantasy 7 demo.(PSX) Man, that takes me back. Played the heck out of it. I even stuck the audio cables into a boom box to record the music onto cassette tape. I used to do that a lot, back in the day. Before mp3s and the internet blew up. That remix song of the FF prelude from the demo was one of my faves back then.

I'm happy with that, there's no need of demos anymore in these days.

I was one of those people that bought Tobal No. 1 only for the FFVII demo disc :D

In the 2000s, I had a PS2 CD filled with demos. I remember it because it introduced me to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Only time in my life I played a demo and IMMEDIATELY ran out to buy the game, I liked it that much.

Demos are just the realm of digital now and they're usually called "betas" and such now, which only serves to muddy the waters when actual betas are still in play. Hell I downloaded the Nioh 2 beta a few days ago.

The "back in my day" was a little sarcasm.

Yup. Even if they did...I cant see anyone making physical Switch demo cards. Companies will use the 8gb card and make you download the rest instead of using a 16gb (cause of cost they say). So using a 8gb card (I dont think they make smaller ones) for a demo is too costly.
