In IDW, the initial explanation was that Kup hadn't been performing the necessary upkeep, the same as Animated Ratchet. It strikes me as being kind of like organics: lack of proper maintenance can age you like nobody's business, while taking proper care of yourself can do wonders for your appearance. For example, my dad's 67 and he looks like he's in his late forties/early fifties, while guys I've worked with were in their fifties and looked like they were in their seventies.

In Kup's case he was always described as not only being old, but an antique. He never upgrades himself at all, and his parts are all the same ones he started with.

It's been said that age is a state of mind, and Kup is just ornery. :)

Why don't you stay on topic like you're supposed to and quit trying to be forum beat cop?

What you need to realize is sarcasm is very difficult to derive from plain text. If you want to try to make a joke, contrary to what you might do in actual conversation you need to make it obvious that you're making a joke. Some people change the color of their text blue to highlight sarcasm, others put in some sort of emoji to convey the feeling when tone-of-voice is absent.

It's all cool, plenty got it. Admittedly I came in here to write "The 2nd law of thermodynamics", but technically Kup ages because he's old... Doesn't sound as catchy though.

Interesting - so basically parts made of rubber or other non-metallic materials.

Kup and Alpha Trion age because machines wear out eventually. They age in a way that resembles human ageing to more easily convey to the audience that they are old. Any further explanations for face wrinkles and metal beards are post hoc :)

    Yes

But truth is that with enough time (granted much longer then a persons life span) nearly the same happens to refined metals, largely due to weathering and exposure to other things

In our RPG game we dealt with it by addressing how often you upgraded and repaired yourself. As for his lines and wrinkles, that was attributed to the aging of the "soft metals" used as the "skin" on the face. Don't replace it, it wrinkles up with wear.

Some mechs were "hardwired", and their bodies were permanent and could only be upgraded so fr and so much.

Probably a similar situation to why Rodimus Prime is noticeably older than Hot Rod. I don't think they do actually age the way we do. They're just upgraded over time.

A-3 or Alpha Trion I also don't think actually grows facial hair. I kind of imagine that they're more like loose wires hanging out through battle damage in his face.
