I've never seen Energon and have no plans to, so I'm genuinely curious - why does everyone hate Kicker? Is he just a badly written angsty edgelord? Or is it another case of Transformer fans blindly hating a human character because for some reason the entire fanbase decided that was gonna be the thing we do even though it's incredibly arbitrary and pointless? Cause if it's another Miko situation where the character is really well written but Transformer fans hate them because they're human and also spoiled children I'm gonna become a Kicker stan out of spite

because I don’t hate myself enough to watch energon lol

also because typically I think the fan base has this nonsensical negative gut reaction to human characters and so I always try and give them the benefit of the doubt lol

 

The one thing I remember about Kicker other than him being generally tiresome, is that he hated his dad. Kicker has the ability to sense Energon (complete with glowing gold DBZ hair) & Kicker’s dad used him like a dowsing rod to find the stuff. For his entire childhood, he was shown to put Kicker in dangerous, scary situations alone dowsing around for Energon.

And then in one episode Ironhide told him to quit his whining & that he should respect his dad. And just like that, Kicker got over all his problems.

It’s like they had an idea for his character, and then decided to just scrap it 6 episodes in.

So that’s pretty lame.

 

That'd be a good reason to hate dear ol' dad.

 

Not to mention Ironhide. If a “friend” told me to shut & just respect the dude that ruined my life, we wouldn’t be friends anymore.

 

Because he is grating. He's always screaming, always saying dumb shit, always being inept or pointless or a tag-along.

The idea of Kicker is sound, a human who can actually be of some use to Transformers in combat situations due to his little suit. Thing is he's such an insufferable, unlikable human being.

Every single everything in Energon summed up in one sentence. "They had an idea, then scrapped it."

 

Right? Same.

 

Oh yeah that is really fucking lame :/ a shame because that sounds like a really cool idea for a character.

Well Energon WAS a mid-2000's anime and mid-2000's anime sure loved their angsty edgy main characters. I don't even dislike the idea that the human is sorta miserable but it's gotta be for a purpose.


Part of this makes me think if they'll ever try and bring Kicker back, or at least some version of Kicker in a new continuity. Hopefully better written, but the idea of a human who A. Has a natural ability to detect Energon, and B. Can aid the Transformers in combat, are great concepts, and I think if done right they can help endear TF Fans to the idea of prominent human characters and hopefully shake the (imo very stupid) stigma against humans in TF Media.

 

I don't hate the character, he just has a bad voice actor.

Ironhide is pretty annoying though.

 

There was an episode where Mika called him out on his angsty attitude too. She said something along the lines of “you LOVE all the attention you get from complaining!”

Which was absolutely hilarious when I watched it. Thinking about it now, seems like all his closest friends were just telling him to get over it. Kinda makes the relatable human character seem uncool. Are we supposed to like him, when the show keeps telling us he’s a whiner? Damn, I actually kinda feel bad for him now.

 

I've come to make an announcement . . .

 

I like him, but the name sounds stupid.

 

I believe he was just kinda bratty.

 

I didn't mind him. As someone said, I thought it was interesting that he resented his father because his dad used him like a mining tool. It was an interesting dimension to the character instead of a generic wholesome angel-type human. So I understood where his angst came from, though I'm not sure if they ever gave an explanation on why he hates Transformers. Maybe because his father was more focused on their needs than his?

Apparently it was dropped (haven't seen the show since 2005) and that was a shame. I remember liking that idea.

 

Now imagine that's his characters high point.

 

.... For starters his name was kicker

 

he screams worse than sam witwicky, kicks his friends, gets character development for like a second and then the writers just scrap it, and hates on his dad and the Autobots for a really weird reason and with zero explanation at all suddenly becomes ok with them.

 

He was a very interesting concept, with a really badass anime protagonist suit, that was completely fumbled by the writers and voice actor. If handled well, I think the character could've been good, but nobody has even attempted to touch Kicker since Energon ended.
