Why? My reasoning for "Con" and "Bot" is their subgroups within their factions. But what about the other non-factioned characters?
Marketability. You need something that a kid can say and remember. Add in a bunch of similar names and subgroups and they're more likely to remember. Also, unless I'm blanking on a few, there weren't that many -tron named characters. Megatron, Galvatron, and Banzai-Tron.
"Tron" is a programming term, so fits with electronic / computerised life forms. It's also an ancient Greek suffix denoting an instrument, which would kinda work in some cases - Megatron and Galvatron could be seen as instruments of destruction, for example.
Jointron and Combatron are examples of Japanese names, however. Are we exclusively referring to their English versions or any kind?
Why are there so many human surnames that end in "-man" or "-son"? Computron, Ectotron, Centuritron...
I can't think of many in G1 aside from Megatron to Galvatron which is just to remind your their the same person. But afterwards they kind of went crazy reusing old names and using faction names as individual names Like Dinobot Insecticon and Constructicon Maximus. I guess is just because they sound robot like like rainbow sparkles sounds like fairies and unicrons... Sorry corns Unicorns I meants to say.
