Is this just a plan to see if Megatron is a good apprentice, or just another blatant plothole?

It didn't matter whether or not Megs knew where the device was, the Matrix is what they really needed and they didn't know where it was.

They knew where the sun harvester is, they just needed to find the matrix to activate it, blow up the sun, obsorb its energy, and The Fallen would be all powerful again!

Well considering that in this universe, the fallen was the first Decepticon leader, Megatron probably had great admiration for him.

Now that could be a plausible explanation for why he tried the same plan 7 times in the same universe!

There was nothing to say that Megatron didn't know where the Harvester was. As people have pointed out, it was the Matrix that was hidden from both The Fallen and Megatron. On the subject of Megatron taking The Fallen's orders, I'm sure that he took them as polite suggestions rather than outright commands. Thus he still doesn't take orders from anyone.

Megs is lucky enough to know that only a Prime can kill him. Im surprised Megs didn't use that against him.

One has to keep in mind that not only was The Fallen one of the seven Primes, who were the very first Transformers and possesses supernatural powers, but he also became the first Decepticon. With this in mind, Megatron saw The Fallen as a god who could help his race become more powerful and make Cybertron itself more prosperous. Therefore, Megatron accepted The Fallen as his "master" and followed his commands without question.

This is how I understood the movie.

They knew Sam had those images in his head for where The Matrix was and had a plan A, plan B, and plan C.

Plan A: Send Wheelie in to steel the shard so they could get the location of The Matrix. Failed because Megan Fox was a bad ass (or Wheelie was a ******).

Plan B: Kidnap Sam and pull the info straight from his brain. Failed because Optimus busted in and broke him out.

Plan C: Let Sam find the Matrix and bring it to the pyramid. Kidnap his parents to get the Matrix from him. Use the Matrix on the Sun Harvester. Failed because The Matrix brought Sam back to life so he could use it to resurrect Optimus and Jetfire sacrificed himself to upgrade him so he kicked all their asses.

So really, Megs and The Fallen had some pretty good ideas, well except for sending Wheelie up against Megan Fox. They just didn't anticipate the Primes resurrecting Sam and Jetfire sacrificing himself. And not only did Megatron know where the Harvester was, everything right up until the Primes resurrect Sam was going according to plan.

but I've only seen the movie once so am going by memory.
