It's clearly is! IMO, it's a total new movie. Or are they going to ruin Travis Knight by bringing Bay back in the fold IF BB is a financial success?

    Because it's not a reboot.

Because movie studios don't issue press releases based on the opinion of one random person?

It was probably developed as a prequel to the '07 film. If they decide to re-work it into a prequel, that would take a lot of thought, it would be a major decision.

After seeing the latest trailer, I too so desperately wish they could come out and say this is an official reboot, with elements pulled from the Bayverse. This movie seriously looks like it has nothing to do with any of the previous 5 movies. The dynamics, designs, everything looks like this should be the start of a reboot. Put those g1 Optimus, shockwave and soundwave designs up against what we've gotten in the first 3 movies and try telling me how it's supposed to be the same universe.

I'm all for a film trying to do things different for the sake of damage control but there's a right and a wrong way to do this, and even though this looks to be the absolute best transformers live-action movie, I'm just not gonna be satisfied as long as they say that this is supposed to be the same universe. It's just extremely bittersweet.

Well, given how TLK was a colossal failure, if a film that is a radical departure from that nonsensical series of retcons ends up being successful, why stick with something that is completely unworkable where all the marketable franchise characters are dead and all the humans have to be replaced again, when you can just start fresh with new, popular designs, none of the baggage of the old continuity, and actually plan shit out ahead of time instead of winging it like the films have been doing for the past six years?

    My guess:

They have to chose. But they don't know how will the fans react to this film. So they made the film, so it can work as both. My bet is that they will give out an official announcement after the movie premier.

I'm still gonna call it a reboot. The only concrete thing linking this to the original movie is Bobby Bolivia's line about cars and their drivers.

If what you say is true, then it shows Paramount doesn't know what to do with this franchise. You either reboot or you don't. My biggest fear that they will bring back Bay and Lorenzo hack, because somehow the execs worship these folks.

Well, that and the director literally saying "this is a prequel."

Not to mention whatever the movie plot is.

Directors can lie you know. Heck its pretty much tradition at this point to misinform everyone about the TF movies up until their release.

I'm sure if the movie will be a hit, then it just shows them that they don't always need Bay to make money. They can go on without him :)

Why so adamant it’s a reboot?

Because a few scenes on Cybertron have G1 bots? Not enough reason in my opinion, the biggest part of the movie is on earth, and all those bots fit into the existing movie look.

Story wise the back story is vague enough that all this can happen, and still be a prequel. And Knight himself says it’s a prequel and he doesn’t seem the type to be bullied into saying it if he doesn’t want to. I don’t think it’s a case of them bringing Bay back, but you can tell they’re slowly gearing up to do another big budget over the top action fest in a few years. I think going forward they’ll be vague enough that you can have future movies fit in the Bayverse if you want to, while retconning a few things when they really need to. Thats how I’d do it.

We do see the S7 logo in one of the scenes, at 1:31 to be precise in the 2nd. official trailer.
So it still has elements that say prequel.

It's a "Reboot" in the same way Xmen: First Class was a reboot. Recycling elements for the old continuity, but doing something new with it.

Don't forget that Paramount said that the movie franchise is going on ice until 2021. This movie was just too far into production to cancel. Although with all the positive reactions, that may change.

Its doesnt actually, In Prime's case, just say its his Cybertronian form, all we've seen was his protoform mode, which is different, with Soundwave, Ravage and Shockwave, just say this is their original true forms, but later on they upgraded into new bodies, heck even in the IDW movie canon, Shockwave had a more G1 inspired look before upgrading to his DOTM form.
