I was sitting here thinking about how much the Universe 2.0 Prowl mold sucks, especially compared to modern classics like Jazz. I also happened to be reading the we want a new Hot Rod thread, and I thought I'd see just how many fellow collectors want a new Prowl too!

For me, these are the failures of the U2.0 mold:

    - no thigh swivel
    - no ball jointed neck/stupid turtleneck plate
    - those damn door wings...why not just use a hinge!
    - overly-hollow body

The general look is quite nice, but there are some serious flaws with this mold. One of my biggest stipulations for buying a figure for my classics display is that the figure must be fun to mess with- U2.0 Prowl is certainly not fun to transform, and is pretty crappy at posing too. I had almost gone on to get my Prowl, Bluestreak and Smokescreen all modded to try and fix these problems, but for all it'd cost I might as well wait and see if a 3rd party tackles these guys!

I've seen people use the RTS Jazz mold as a base which, while looks good, doesn't look spot on to Prowl thanks to how different they actually are by design. I've seen people use Alternity Magnus which I must say looks sharp, but then there's all that back kibble and less than stellar boots. There's even rumour of an MP Prowl in the nearish future, but he'd probably be a bit too big for a classics display right?

What do you guys think? Want a new, more fun Prowl/SS/BS for your collections? What do you hate about the U2.0 mold?

It's a shame, when it first came out I quite liked it. Now? Not so much....
Meanwhile, the U2.0 Lambro mold- particularly Sunstreaker- holds up as one of my favourites.

If sources are to be believed a Masterpiece Prowl is in the works....that's all I need.

Doesn't really help the Classic line though. Masterpieces are all over sized toys.

Exactly. It can be perfect, but it's no good for classics collectors. I'm so close to finishing S1 & S2, why would I start all over again at a higher price point?

The QC would be terrible anyway :p

It's a shame though. If the new MPs were about a head shorter, they'd fit in just perfect.

I'm kinda fond of the Prowl mold to be honest, it's not perfect, but it's a pretty faithful modernization.
The dorrs are a bit silly though.

I don't think the esthetics would match. MPs are too true to G1 to fit well with classics.

If this FansProject Code (not-Chromedome) ends up being awesome, I would definitely want a suitable Prowl to team him up with for some Law and Order adventures like in IDW's Shadowplay storyline in More Than Meets The Eye.

I thought the prowl mould was bloody fantastic when it came out and when I got mine out of storage a few months ago time hadn't really changed my opinion. A masterpiece version would be bought without a seconds thought but there's nothing ostensibly wrong with the classics mould, all the sore points you listed are just nitpicks. little flaws like this are part and parcel of transformers, they're not action figures after all and I've never understood why people seem to think that absolutely every toy should bend like an olympic gymnast.

I'm happy with Universe 2.0 Prowl, and it's repaints. Great Figures in my opinion. Universe Galvatron, and Classics Rodimus are two that instantly come to mind that I woud like to see redone, but not Prowl.

We'll probably not get one this decade, but I'm all for a new classics Prowl. It'll most likely be smaller with better engineering.

My biggest gripe with the current one was the sticky paint on both Prowl and Bluestreak. It made them look dirty. So I took some flat white for Prowl and painted over the just the white on the doors (scrape off the lettering) and roof. Then I took some clear coat and sprayed it over to make the new painted pieces resemble the plastic unpainted parts of the figure. I took metallic silver to the doors of my Bluestreak to restore him.

I'd love an IDW Prowl with optional armor upgrades and table-flipping action.

I couldn't care less about the Classics, that style of Transformer is essentially obsolete in my eyes.

I dig prowl for the universe line that we got...but I would also buy a MP prowl in a heartbeat.

I've had mine since release and it's been great. :thumbs2:

Yeah, Prowl isn't one of the figures I think about when I think of figures I'd want someone else to tackle. That focus still lies on Galvatron.

while the prowl mold we got is very poor, there are so many other characters needing a toy before he gets a 2.0

Yeah, classics prowl is pretty good. Maybe an MP by hasbro but that's all.

When it came out, yeah I loved it too. But stand it next to Hound. To Mirage. To Bumblebee, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, Jazz...on and on it goes... and it just doesn't hold up. Every other classics toy I have on display, from early classics to Generations, have far better range of motion and body design that the Nissan bros mold. No other figure in my display has such limitations (bar Rodimus, and he'd be replaced too if it weren't for the Protector armour fixing everything).

Are they really nitpicks? A head that sits too high up from the chest? Door wings that have to be popped off every time you want to transform it? A chest that looks empty from the front, and is hollow from the side? They all seem like pretty major issues to me, but I guess I just have higher standards when it comes to toys.

And I wouldn't exactly say a proper neck or the ability to turn your thighs slightly is a gymnastic speciality. I'm sure you do the same all the time, I know I'm very capable of such ;)

Yeah the aesthetics could be a bit of an issue, all depends on what we actually get really. Fingers crossed though! I do like the Prowl mold, I especially love the Bluestreak repaint (most gorgeous colour scheme ever imo), but recent years have spoilt me and made me expect more for my money. I'd happily pay the £50 3rd party rate three times over for a better Nissan bros mold.

Mine too ta ;)  I was lucky enough to get perfect paint jobs on Prowl, Bluestreak and Smokescreen first time round :D

I'm strictly S1 & S2 Autobot collecting only, so my list of wants and needs has been getting shorter and shorter these last couple of years. I'm turning round to how I can improve and perfect what I have- like adding articulated hands, new weapons or mounts for shoulder launchers and the like. But Prowl, after much thought, requires too much work to be worth saving, especially if there's a chance of a new, better figure.

And I do mean for a third party Nissan bros mold. I don't care what Hasbro put out these days, as it'll no doubt be undersized, underpainted or just shitty plastic/hollow. I'm willing to pay the third party pricing to get what I actually want, as it's the only way now to actually get what I want.

Shame, because that's what the thread was created with the intention of discussing and what we're talking about. No horse in the race for you then eh?

No qualms with Prowl whatsoever. Looks utterly fantastic next to the other autobots. A brilliant modern upgrade, one of the reasons why I love TFs.
