Maybe only half the icon he would be. It’d be like Batman without the Joker, Professor X without Magneto, Abel without Cain.

Which is why I hope Megs returns.

No one, Optimus would be no hero without Megatron, and in DOTM, Optimus would've been killed by Megs if he didn't rush in and beat the slag out of Sentinel.

Well, let's consider how long Megatron was MIA in the Marvel comics...

Well, according to what Optimus said at the end of DotM, we'll find out.

I personally would like to see some emotional after thought as to what Prime is thinking in regards to defeating his nemesis once and for all. There has to be some emotions going through him.

Who is Optimus Prime without Megatron?

Without Megatron, he is a soldier who no longer has an enemy to battle, no evil plots to foil, no armies to combat. After millienia of warfare, it's finally over, and at last, he can live in peace on Earth, the new home he and his Autobots dedicated themselves to protect and help.

There is no Fallen, no Sentinel, no Harverster, no more enemies, no more ancient artifacts. There is no concerns anymore.

Put simply, Optimus Prime is a soldier who has won his battles and saved his home, and can finally know a peace uncontaminated by the threat of the Decepticons

    "An Optimus STILL!"

No, but seriously, its a good question. I mean, the easy answer is "the Autobot leader". His drive and agenda would likely be more or less unchanged until the Decepticon threat was completely gone (and in many incarnations, the death of Megatron has been insufficient to end that threat), but what about after that? What does Optimus become when there's no more war for him to fight? In other continuities, the answer is pretty clear: In some cases, he'd simply go back to his job as an archivist, or an explorer, or as a political figure. He'd act as a teacher, or a protector, to both his Autobot brothers and his new human friends.

But in the movieverse, it's a little more complicated. We don't see Prime outside of the context of conflict for long, and even then, his words and actions tend to relate back to the war with the Decepticons in some way. How much of what he was before the war truly remains? We've seen that he's willing to give up his leadership, but could he lay down his weapons as well? We see his brutality, his unwillingness to negotiate with or spare his enemies, what if he decides to intervene in human conflicts (as other Autobots are seen to do)? What if he decides he loves the earth so much that he needs to protect it from humans he doesn't agree with? For all of his willingness to allow humanity their self-determination in repudiation of the Decepticons and Sentinel, how uninvolved could he remain with no Decepticons to fight and no other place to go? How much has the war come to define him as a character?

I like how Optimus and Megatron play off eachother as a concept, but that's the point of it: The characters need to develop eachother, rather than simply remain in a stagnant rivalry. There's been some life in the concept in recent history (Animated, for example), but I think that having both an Optimus and a Megatron is far from a necessity, and that the precedent can show this.

The much better question is, from a character perspective, who is Megatron without Optimus?

Well put, Meta. He has a second chance at life, a chance to build something new for himself without the risk that Megatron's band of happy psychos would wreck everything again.

Naturally, there's going to be an adjustment period, but hey, he's been through worse.

I picture him going crazy without anyone to kill and TF4 becomes Nemesis Prime where Optimus snaps begins killing everyone still alive from the last movies.

A broken shell of a warrior, deranged by seeing himself become the very thing he fought so long against.

Much like how Batman has Two-Face, The Riddler, and Ra's Al Ghul, there are other Decepticons, and other leaders. Perhaps Jhiaxus or Thunderwing can give it a go, since Shockwave got a hook to the face.

Optimus wasn't defined by Megatron. He was defined by whoever felt fit to stand in his way of saving Cybertron and later, Earth. I never really felt there was any connection between Prime and Megatron beyond two leaders on opposite factions.

dont think it matters. OP and Megs barely had any interaction after TF07, he never even said megatron's name in ROTF and DOTM. in short, he would be the same but probably a little happier because the war is over.

Untrue. Optimus and Megatron's interactions were not blatant and in your face, but it's still there. They are also the ONLY two warriors to have any kind of special interaction with eachother (asides from Sentinel and a little between Prime and Shockwave). Everyone else is just "BOOM BOOM BAM DECEPTICREEP" but Prime and Megs in all three movies banter and argue philosophy.

I hate you so much right now. As soon as I saw the title for this thread, I was like "I've got to make this joke!" And then I scroll through it, and I see someone else made it for me. Ain't that a bitch. :(

    OT:
He's still Optimus Prime. Still the same set of ideals and personality. He's just lost the defining part of his life (the war) and now there's got to be some adjusting. He finally has time to breathe, and can live a little. Prime's not gonna have the threat of Megatron over his shoulder the entire time, and he doesn't have to live with the weight of the world on his shoulders. It'd be nice to see a comic look at a post war Optimus.

    Unfortunately...
