who’s your favorite incarnation of ultra magnus? mine is prime ultra magnus
To be honest this is a character I've never been able to make myself care about. Don't like the design that much and the character is kind of boring by design. IDW was kind of interesting before MTMTE got ahold of him and he was cool in TFTM before just becoming a yes man in the cartoon proper. One of those I guess.
I prefer G1 seasons three and four. He had the proper balance between tough hardass, wise mentor and caring friend.
The 86 movie and Animated had incredibly bland versions of Magnus. The 86 movie had Magnus just being there doing nothing and really, he didn't get involved in battles at all, which made him feel like a total pantywaist. And Animated... remember when I told you about the Elite Guard being a total joke in TFA? Well, Ultra Magnus is just one of the many reasons why I don't like the Guard. I like the idea of Magnus being the big head of the 'bots, but he's so boring and acting way too grand that it makes it look like he doesn't care about anything around him. Again, if he and Sentinel had been the true villains, I would have liked the character more and maybe I could have forgiven the series a bit more (but still not much).
RiD 2001 had a different version of Magnus, and it worked quite well. Not as good as the G1 seasons three and four version, but a close second.
TFP... boy, talk about a waste. They cast him perfectly (honestly, even though I like Jack Angel the most as Magnus, I like Michael Ironside more than Robert Stack), but the character was just a damsel-in-distress. He comes in and looks like a badass, but once he gets in battle, he constantly gets defeated, gets his hand smashed by Predaking and is left unconscious for most of Predacons Rising. I mean, seriously... this is one of the finest warriors on Cybertron? He constantly has to get rescued by the other Autobots. Hell, even Smokescreen, a total rookie, could kick more ass than Magnus did.
The Prime version, although I love every incarnation.
Marvel's is probably my personal fave.
For all of Prime's failures I think their version of UM was pretty good, and they got a great voice for him.
IDW Magnus was great for awhile as well.
I would say G1 cartoon overall was the best version of him mostly in season 3 and 4 as The UltimateBum said although I do like Prime version fairly well and if he did not get the crap beaten out of him on one or two occasions he could be tie for first place. RID is a nameslap but is still fun to watch and although the design for animated is really cool as a character animated Magnus sucks and does very little for me.
IDW, prior to MTMTE.
My vote goes to G1, as I've always liked G1 Ultra Magnus.
After G1, I would rank Prime Magnus in second place.
I think this was a problem with Prime Autobots in general, not just Ultra Magnus. It seemed to me like all of the Autobots weren't all that great at their jobs, and when a character was supposed to be wrong, I thought they were right.
Well, that's true. Doesn't help that personally, I found most of the Autobots (as well as most of the Decepticons and the three human kids) kinda bland or downright unlikeable (with the exceptions being Bulkhead, Wheeljack and Smokescreen).
Kind of a toss up. I don’t have any strong feelings towards any version of UM. I do like RID 2001 Magnus for his design & alt mode. And at least his rivalry with Optimus was different.
I like TFA UM for giving him the signature hammer & his newfound rank.
TFP UM was just doing the “I do everything by the book & I’m super stiff, dull & I relatable,” routine. He wasn't bad, but didn't stand out to me.
Robert Stack makes G1 UM memorable with that voice of his but that’s about all.
Ultra Magnus is one of those characters who I'll say I like despite there not really being any notable versions of him.
IDW2005. Loved the inclusion of Minimus Ambus. Wish they had tied G1 Ultra Magnus’ insecurities to the IDW2005 radical Marshall a little better. Plus, Jack Angel reprising the role for the BotCon script reading was perfect for the character. Runner up is certainly G1 season 3 Magnus.
Marvel by far, competent leader, bad ass in battle, can go toe to toe with galvatron who was basically a demigod in marvel. Shame how his story got cut short in time wars but still the most interesting version of him to me.
Beast machines because he's not in it.
This is a bit of a difficult choice.
G1 is iconic... but kind of boring.
RID is the only combiner and Omega Prime is awesome... but he also hates Optimus and combining, and other than having the same vehicle mode looks nothing like Ultra Magnus.
Animated is a nice homage to the original while still actually being a different mold from Optimus. But he's also kind of stuck up and boring... not as bad as other members of the Elite Guard but still not really likable.
Prime is back to just being a retool of Optimus and is again just kind of this stiff boring character.
Other than LOOKING cool, I mean all these guys have very cool designs but they're all really boring and generic characters. That said I went with RID just cause of the coolness factor of the design being able to combine with Optimus.
Dreamwave solely based on the fact they actually DID the Nekkid Magnus mode.
It's weird because I love the general character of Ultra Magnus but I'm not super attached to any particular incarnation. Does that even make sense?
G1. And thank you for separating out G1 from IDW.
