I'm near the end of rearranging my Transformers display, and have come to the Neo-G1/Classics/CHUG section. I try to theme my displays as best as I can, and are partially influenced by the current IDW stories. However I tend not to stick Autobots in a Decepticon bit and vice-versa, so no Megatron or Cyclonus in the Lost Light display. However my question is what Megatron do you feel more represents a good update of the original G1 toy? I've used the Classics one for years, but I'm now partially thinking that Combiner Wars Megatron is better. So please chime-in, all other suggestions welcomed, as I have a few other figures on my "to- buy" list, and one is Cloud Megatron. Cheers. Phill
My main go to megs is TR but I keep all of them. The size is perfect. It has that classics updated look. BTW, I have a feeling we'll be getting voyager seekers.
I'm not against 3rd Party, as I have the FP Dinobots, Feral Rex and Apex and Geminus, but I try to stick to Hasbro and Takara Tomy stuff as much as possible.
My perfect Megatron would be a voyager with a Cybertronian tank altmode, a second gun mode would be icing.
Assuming they don't skip him and Optimus like they did Sentinel Prime, Alpha Trion, Stripes, a bunch of solo TMs, Alpha Bravo, etc...
My go to Classics Megatron has been the Classics mold but I did eventually upgrade to the Takara United repaint. Don't care so much for the gun mode, but I think robot mode looks good and even better without the nerf safety colors. The other classics Megatrons since have looked decent to ok, but none of them have seemed good enough to replace United Megatron. But CW Leader Megatron has come the closest. While United Megs is with my Classic Cons, I have CW Megatron displayed on my Bots shelf with his Autobot logo applied. Another Classics Megatron deserving of honorable mention is Generations WFC Megatron.
I never did get my hands on a version of the Classics Voyager mold, though I did try here and there. I wasn't keen on a gun alt mode as it just doesn't display well in a group of vehicles. I had the WFC deluxe for a few years, and while it was a good representation, it just wasn't big enough. I bought CW Megatron, and while it looks fabulous, it's just too big compared to the rest of the collection. TR Megatron hits the sweet spot for me. Yeah, he could use some paint, but otherwise he does everything I want in a modernized Megatron.
In terms of official stuff, Titan Returns is pretty good, but Combiner Wars Megatron seems to be the way to go, because it's the body type Hasbro seems to be using most. Devastation, Combiner Wars, mobile games, they all take elements, if not completely use, the CW Megatron figure.
Assuming you're planning to display a voyager-class Optimus, TR Megatron would probably be the one you want to use. Combiner Wars is great but only scales well if you're opting for real world proportions. Real world scale: CW Megatron TR Soundwave CW Seekers Cloud Shockwave CW Constructicons regular CHUG Autobots Balanced scale: TR/Classic Megatron FoC Soundwave Classic Seekers FoC Shockwave Classic Constructicons regular CHUG Autobots
While I don't have him and won't be getting him, TR Megatron looks pretty great. I would get him, but I have a nice 3P Megs for my collection who won't be going anywhere soon. I'll definitely be picking up the inevitable Blitzwing repaint/retool when it comes, though. TR Megs has the look, and the triple changer aspect is a nice touch if your like me and can't decide if you prefer a tank or jet alt mode (unless gun Megatrons are your thing). Runner up goes to CW Megatron. A decent figure, but has some jank to him. I'm not sure what scale you go for in your collection, but I find Leader class to be too big (especially since I use a Voyager sized Prime).
Im going to use mmc tyrantron for my chug megs. He is based off idw. I think cw megs is too tall. Just my opinion. To each his own.
CW Leader Megatron is okay, but TR Megatron is a bit more fun. Neither are perfect, but they're both solid toys. (My favorite Megatron toy right now is MakeToys Rioter Despotron, though.)
