Have you been to the city before? If no, don't worry about toy hunting, take in the sights and sounds.
Are you driving in your own vehicle or relying in public transport? This can affect how much shopping you plan to do.

The internet. I have family out there and that's where they do 90% of their shopping.

So you should be familiar enough to know there's not much that isn't available anywhere else. Stick to the internet.

Forbidden Planet had Combiner Wars stuff last I was there (2 years ago...) Image Anime had a bit more varied selection, MPs etc. I think there is a Target in Harlem, but I don’t know if they stock TFs.

14th Street and Union Square has Forbidden Planet. Tons of figures there. And walking distance from there to St Marks is Toy Tokyo which has an excellent selection of toys.
