I was in college but not taking classes at the time as it was a trimester school with non class periods meant for relevant work experience. I was also a US Marine reservist at the time. It took until 2006 for us to be deployed as a result of the GWT, and to Iraq not Astan.

My friends and I didn't think it was anything other than an accident so we actually watched a movie. After the movie ended and it was still on the news (and they had more info) was when we knew. A relative was also a federal gov employee at the time in D.C. and amidst the initial chaos she told me there were reports of car bombs going off also. Of course we now know that wasn't the case, but it shows how chaotic and confusing things were.

2 more years and It will have been 2 decades. Time flies. Anybody know what was the intended 4th target had the passengers not overtaken the plane?

NYU. Literally a mile away. Saw the explosion from the 2nd plane hitting and we all gtfo of Manhattan. I had about 8 or 9 people come with me to stay at my mothers in BX. Most of them students who's families were in different parts of the country.

That was my first semester at college and one of if not the most unforgettable day of my life. Absolutely surreal.

I was in the Air Force at the time stationed at Edwards AFB. I was working night shift at the time, so I was sleeping. Got woken up by a phone call from my mom to turn on the TV. I turned it on about 2 min before the second plane hit. Base went on lockdown and I spent the next week on 12 hours shifts doing Alert Aircraft EOR (End of Runway) Inspections.

I was a F-15 Crew Chief at the time doing Transient Alert there. Couple months later put in my package to cross train to do Helicopter Flight Engineer and then went on to do Combat Search and Rescue for the rest of my career. Did many tours in Afghanistan.

Crew Chief when I was in was 2A3
    Flt Eng was 1A1

They did away with most separate enlisted Aircrew fields and rolled them into one recently as the Aircrew Mission Specialist or something like that. I never really kept up with it when I was medically retire 10 years ago.

Not a PJ, but got to work with them exclusively. Pavehawk Flt Engineers are as I like to say are over-educated gunners....

I was in the shower when the attacks started happening. When I got out, I turned the TV on and watched it all happen. It was horrifying to see the towers collapse. I didn't have to work until that evening and my girlfriend at the time was at work. She got home a couple of hours later and we just held each other. It was so surreal to know that these people went to work that morning. They never got to go home and see their spouses or their children again.

I believe I've previously posted what I was doing on that fateful day. My dad and I watched the towers being hit and then go down on television together. We lived in Brooklyn and could see the smoke and smell the burning jet fuel waft in from afar.

Luckily, I was home at the time (college student in NYC) and wouldn't have to go to classes until later (needless to say, classes were canceled) but my mother and brother were trapped in Manhattan for hours while roads and trains were closed off.

That event was a big part of why I enlisted and still serving today as active duty. I did have the opportunity to visit the 9/11 memorial grounds and Freedom Tower in 2016. Very sobering experience.

    :thumb

We have quite a few folks here who are current or prior Air Force, myself included.

A friend of mine went in as a comm guy (same as me), got out for a bit, and then came back in as a PJ not too long ago. He was the type that was never happy sitting behind a desk and he loves his job now.

I was looking at the news this morning and saw the images of the Towers coming down and I just started crying it still hurts so much. I was there 2 weeks before it happened. I was at work the day it happened, we all stopped what we were doing and watched the news.

While I wasn't born yet here is my dad's story:

My brother was born September 2nd 2001, and my dad was at my Grandfather's house, he was watching the events live. My dad was confused as to what was happening and believed it was a movie, my grandfather told him it wasn't, and as soon as he said that the second plane crashed.

The most scariest part of 9/11 is that the terrorists tried to attack Chicago, and my Mom and Dad worked at city hall. It's a miracle they stayed home that day.

    Not me but my dad.

He was in Philadelphia for a business trip. IIRC he was supposed to go to New York later in the afternoon for a business meeting, but his client cancelled as soon as the second plane hit the Towers.

My mom meanwhile was on the other side of the globe in Indonesia. She saw the report from a local news television and thought it was a movie like so many others. Her mom (my grandma) told her it wasn’t, so she panicked and called my dad to make sure everything’s okay.

Ultimately as a result of the attacks shutting down airports across the US, my dad was stranded there for a week or so.

2nd period in Dr. Macomson’s Anatomy class. I was a junior in high school, we were in class getting ready to dissect fetal pigs when another teacher came in the to tell us that a plane had hit the tower. We rushed to the library to watch the carnage unfold. We were all in shock the rest of the day, we didn’t know if WW3 was about to break out or if another attack would find its way to rural northeast Georgia. The rest of the day is a bit of a blur, the next thing I remember was football practice. As I said we were in shock, it was difficult to concentrate on the playbook. We ended up practicing until 9:00 pm that night. The coach told us if we felt we had better things to do, we should go ahead a turn in our equipment. A quarter of the team quit that night. The coach was such an asshole he was fired at the end of the season.

Was at work when the news broadcast the first tower getting hit. All major highways in my area of NJ were closed. By the time I got to Newark from Secaucus to pick up my son the second tower was struck. I can still remember seeing the smoke from the top of 2nd Ave as I drove home through local streets.
