The Best- and Worst-Run States in America - Yahoo! Finance

Now I didn't expect North Dakota to be number one, but with the shale oil and stuff it does make sense.

Now I know everyone will be shocked by finding out California is a toilet. If the weather wasn't nice in so much of the state would it have redeeming qualities?

Yes, but that's a loaded question, since almost every feature down to the landscape is dictated and sculpted by weather.

Interesting that the "best-run" states all have relatively low populations vs. land mass and few urban areas, vs. how all the "worst-run" states have high populations per km (except Arizona) and high urban populations...

Off Course the states that in the middle of nowhere have no stress. They don't need to worry about hurricanes washing their cities away.

Completely not surprised that California is last. It's part of the reason why I'm glad I got out of there five years ago.

Virginia is 9th best. Also not very surprising to me.

Honestly I am bit surprised to see Minnesota ranked so high. I figured 15th at best.

    13. Texas
    > Debt per capita: $1,679 (6th lowest)
    > Budget deficit: 20.9% (16th largest)
    > Unemployment: 7.9% (tied-23rd lowest)
    > Median household income: $49,392 (25th highest)
    > Pct. below poverty line: 18.5% (11th highest)

Texas’ economy grew by 3.3% in 2011, an increase larger than all but three other states. Among the main drivers for the growth is the oil boom. Texas was the largest crude oil producer in the nation last year with 27% of the nation’s total refinery capacity. It has also been able to grow its economy partially through exports, including petroleum products and chemicals, which totaled $250 billion in 2011, or $9,732 per capita — the second-most in the nation behind Louisiana. Outside of energy, the state also effectively manages its finances, owing just $1,679 per capita in fiscal 2010, less than all but a handful of states. Texas imposes low taxes — and no income taxes — on both individuals and businesses. The state has one of the most business-friendly tax climates, and it had one of the lowest tax burdens in the nation in 2010.

    I'll take it.

Pennsylvania is twentieth. That's not great, but not quite terrible either.
