During the production of AOE, it was stated by many members of the cast and crew that the film would take place after the battle of Chicago. However, the number of years skipped seemed to vary between 3 and 4 depending on who was asked. Later on, the White House Chief of Staff claims that he has only been working for the unnamed President for a few weeks, indicating a change of office and further supporting the "5 years ago" claim.

During Tessa's introduction, she mentions that she is nearing the end of the semester and is even seen being denied for financial aid indicating she is approaching her college years. Graduations are traditionally held in the Spring to Early summer. There is a large amount of the film that seems to take place over the course of several days, but a number is never assigned to them.

This ultimately means that the final battle and Optimus' departure take place around the summer of 2016.

Now, could this unexpected 5 year gap have been used intentionally in order to get the new trilogy back to a "present day" standard with Transformers 5?

As of yet, we don't have a set release date for the next installment but it is inevitably coming soon. If the film is in fact released in 2016, the narrative could pick back up in present day and follow Optimus into space. If the film is released in 2017, it could be said that Optimus has been MIA for a 6 months to a year and still achieve present day timing.

This thread isn't intended to become a 2016 vs 2017 debate, but rather a discussion of the 5 year gap and whether or not it was intentional to se thte films back in "present day" later on down the road.

I do hope it starts getting back on track with the present day. When you have a movie based in the future you start having to worry about things like advanced technology and you can miss some current events that should've been mentioned in the fictional world.
