When I first saw ROTF demolishor months ago, I thought it was the dumbest idea ever. The whole unicycle thing, the weird looks of the toy. I hated it more than anyother. Now though, I love it. It's one of my favorites. I think once you get past the idea of all bots needing to be humanoid (which is pretty silly anyway), I really enjoyed him much more. Also on the toy, if you just fold the wheels back a bit, he doesn't look nearly so gappy, and stands very easily. Have any of you ever hated something, only to have it grow on you and become a favorite?
I won't say hate, but I was not enamored with Animated at all when the concept designs were leaked. That opinion radically changed.
Same here with TFA and BM. I had to watch BM twice all the way through before I finally liked it. TFA killed me at first with the designs, but after the pilot movie I was pretty much sold. I've been trying to avoid as much ROTF stuff as possible, which isn't easy... so I haven't seen enough of Demolishor to get over his unicycle of terror just yet. I still think it looks cornball, but we'll see once the movie comes out.
i was kind of against his design initially, but in general i love the weirdo inhuman transformers. i bought bw quickstrike soley because of his freaky arms, i love rotf rampages crab legs, so i have recently been finding it hard to avoid buying demolishor, i just wish he had decent hands. for the movie though i think he looks awesome. when i saw how weird he was it made me excited for a devastator toy because i assumed that by giving them weird designs and now forcing human proportions on them it would be easy for hasbro to make an awesome combined mode. how wrong i was.
I'm generally not someone who "grows to like" something since I think that's just a tricky way of saying "I finally gave in", and 9.9 times out of 10, my first instinct / gut reaction is always right. That said, I quickly ended up eating my own foot with a side of crow when it came to Animated. I absolutely HATED the design style when it first showed up, but after being blown away by how insanely clever AND accurate the toys were, I turned into one of the series biggest fanboy cheerleaders. My opinion on Beast Wars and the Movie verse, however, has not changed. I do *understand* why people like those series, but I just personally could never get on those bandwagons. Save for Animated being the exception, I like good 'old fashioned' blocky robots in the tradition of G1, Alternators, War Within, etc. and the way that guys like Don Figueroa or Guido Guidi draw them.
Most of the time my first impressions/gut instinct/whatever is right on the money (a good example is the first Movie Starscream toy. lots of people played the "Pictures don't do it justice! It's truly awesome in your hands!" card, and I bought on the idea that maybe they were right and I was missing out. Guess what - they weren't and I wasn't. (as far as my opinions are concerned) I've run into a few toys that I didn't think I would like, but did, and vice-versa. One that stands out to me is "Bendy Prime" from Armada. I assumed I would like it, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way when I got one (I think there were some size or sculpting aspects that made me like the larger Armada Prime toy more at the time). Given time though, it 'grew on me' and stayed a favorite toy for a long time. I don't know whether you would call that a double-reversal, or just that my first impression had to fight my second impression for dominance.
feralstorm, what was your first impression of energon grimlock? that it was great? I swear, you gotta be the only person in the fandom that likes the thing.
I know the feeling with Animated. I finally converted the day before the final episode when I got the pilot on DVD.
I'd have to say that I was like this overall with Animated. I still don't enjoy the illustration style of it, but I honestly thought it was going to be one of the dumbest things to happen to TF media. I'm glad I was wrong As far as toys go, I have to say that Universe Powerglide fits the bill here. I'm not a completeist of the Classics/Universe line, and I simply get what I like. That being said, I just wasn't sold on PG when I first saw photos. When he got to the store even, I thought "easy pass", but then I got a $15 Target gift card for Christmas. I figured it wouldn't be a bad chance to take, and I ended up liking the mold a whole lot after I got it. I really think I'll be the minority here, but 2007 movie Jazz was another. No, it's not a perfect toy, but it ended up being worlds better than I originally thought it would be. I am glad I waited on the Premium version though Another notable example would be (of all things) the FansProject City Commander armor set. Initially, for me, I thought this set would be more money that what it was worth, and I actually held off preordering him right up until the last minute. I told myself, "this does look cool, I'm a HUGE Magnus fan, and I'll kick myself if I don't get it" so I did. Needless to say, I've had no regrets since
Generally my opinion doesn't change. When I first saw Animated and thought "My God those are ugly! The kids are not going to support this longterm." I was right (even weathering the more fanatical Animated fans that screamed "NO! Animated id doin wellzz LOL!" up until two weeks before it was canceled for doing poorly). HOWEVER I do recall one case and that is Beast Wars. When I first saw it I was unsure what to think because it was so different. Not necessarily bad but just unsure. Now I really enjoy Beast Wars as a good show so opinions can change if it is something that can grow on you.
I changed my mind on the design aesthetic of the live action movies. Although the news of the new movie was enough to get me intrested in Transformers again for the first time since G1 I didn't like the look of the robots when I first saw them and proceeded to totally ignore everything related to the movie. I finally decided to watch the first movie around last Christmas time and to my suprise I liked it a lot more than I expected to,OK it's no cinematic masterpiece and the human characters are pretty cardboard but there's no denying the robots themselves look pretty spectacular and many of them have grown on me to the point where I like them a lot more than any previous versions of the character and some of the new ones for ROTF like Ravage and Long Haul are already among my favorite designs. If I have any issue with the way Bayformers look now it's more to do with the fact that the complex CGI models don't translate into mass market toys very well which means that my movie collection isn't going to be as complete as I would like.
Some things I'm slow to warm up on. Took me an episode or two to warm up to Beast Wars but character won me over. Took a bit to warm up to Animated but the combo of character and the Decepticons rightfully being feared by the Autobots instead of being jobbers really won me over to Animated. So far nothing has really won me over to the movie stuff. The look just doesn't click with me and characters just aren't working out as well for me.
I have been seeing the wheelbot designs for the fembots for as long as anyone else, and I still hate them. I saw 90% of Animated, and I still don't like anyone's design except Blurr, Starscream, and Megatron. On the other hand, 12 years ago I used to think girls were gross because they had cooties. Now all I want are their cooties. >.>
There's one or two other people! I always liked it, but I will admit I like my custom version better (a little extra paint, reversed forearms and robot head swapped with the Classics toy). Like it better than I like you right now, anyway. Your first impression was "The kids are not going to support this long-term." ?
