What's more important to you when watching a TF fanfilm or homage 1: That the voices sound as close to the voice actors as possible. 2: That the VA's in the film do their take on the character?
A good performance trumps accuracy to a past portrayal every time. If the performance portrays the character, draws in the audience, and carries the story better when it's not the same as the original VA, stick with the new one.
They must be able to properly act the part first and foremost. If that requires the actor to do something different from the original voice, that's a sacrifice that must be made.
Option 2: If they act better like example: Bumper Robinson made Animated Blitzwing better than G1 Blitzwing because he and along with the charecter was a fresh take on the charecter and gave a strong preformance out of him.
Nah, it's not discussing a video but the logistics of fan films, this is as good a place as any. TBH, I prefer a little creative freedom. Based on the original, but with freedom to do their own take.
Agreed. He did make Blitzwing his own. Another one I can think of is Steve Blum's Starscream. Not a hint of any other Starscream in how he plays him, and it's become my second favorite SS voice.
You know at this point, I'd not only put less emphasis on how accurate it is to previous incarnations, but I'd almost prefer it to be different for the sake of having something new instead of just rehashing what we've already got. For example, emulating the G1 starscream is great & all, but haven't we had enough of that over the years, and couldn't we stand to grow on a different starscream, especially if it's simply a homage instead of a revival? Along with that, one of the things that I liked about the Dukes of Hazzard movie was that Boss & Roscoe were pretty much brand new characters with the old namesake, rather than being copies of the original actors.
If you're doing the voice for the actual G1 Starscream (for example) then you have to sound like Latta. If you're doing a new Starscream, such as the movie, Animated or Prime, then do your own thing that works well for the character.
Some characters, like Optimus, Starscream, and Soundwave, have (with few exceptions) always sounded very similar, and have very iconic voices. They should always have the sam basic sound (i.e. Optimus sounding like Peter Cullen, Starscream having a raspy voice, Soundwave having a robotic monotone voice). Others, like Megatron and Bumblebee, sound different for different versions. I'm fine with them sounding different. I also like it when a completely new voice is made, as long as it's good, like how Animated Blitzwing had a German accent. However, I agree with what other people are saying about how talent is overall more important.
