Warning: Rant Time I'm trying to not talk for the masses, as it's my own opinion... But OMG! I fall for it every time. I was patient with the first 3 movies as we got to see 'some' of our G1 autobots and decepticons on the big screen. During the filming process, the film was talked about as being a type of sequel, maybe with a little reboot in it. Huh? What I was expecting was a trip down memory lane this time. I don't know why, but I was. The story opened itself up to harnessing the dead decepticons and transferring their life into new bodies and abilities. Great so far! I was expecting some kind of rebirth of the decpticons Ala Galvatron, Starscream, etc... (to kind of follow the cartoons) Nothing. No decepticons anywhere (IMO) Galvatron was the only one, but once again, he got a whole 4min of screen time, if that. REALLY?? UGH. When are we going to take the flippin humans out of the picture and focus on an actual Autobots vs. Decepticons story???!!?? When are we going to get our epic battles with Prime and Megatron/Galvatron? When are we going to see some battles over energon? Has Bay ever really watched the G1 cartoons? He has the power to make such an epic movie, but comes short... so way short, every time. As hokey as they are, I get so much satisfaction when watching the G1 cartoons with my kids. Then I flip on a movie and get 2.5 hours of sighs and eye rolling. I'm not looking for realism.. I just want to see Bay use his technology to tell the story of the cartoons. I want to see Starscream scheming to overthrow Megatron. I want to see Soundwave always at Megtron's side. I wan't some flippin Decepticon storylines, and return of 15 of our favorite G1 characters... instead of newly created, flippin fat, cigar smoking robots. Ahhh! I'm freaking out now! lol. I've sat patiently for 3 movies, and this one had the opportunity to make things right since most everyone dies in the 3rd movie. But it just got worse.
Hmmm. I think we may get it in the fifth one. They did say KSI was 'indirectly' uploading their minds into new bodies. Maybe Galvatron will go back to KSI to do the finishing touches, since the vechicons proved to be a hot mess.
I'm less interested in the remaking of G1 or the G1 style, but I flat out *need* more Decepticons. I loved AOE and that was the only thing I found that was a real, lasting problem with the movie. There's virtually no robot antagonism.
There are less than a dozen Decepticons left out of the 200 that spread around the world in DOTM. Guess most of them were killed in Chicago. Galavtron would be forming his gang back together again. The Dirty Dozen?
No. No. No. Just no. I have nothing against G1, but I don't want the movie version of the same exact same thing. I know some of the movies plot/storyline elements are taken from G1, but I'm not interested in seeing a retelling. I've said this before. I absolutely love Assassin's Creed. They're talking about a movie being made with Michael Fassbender. I'm not interested in sitting through a retelling of Desmond's story and Altair, Ezio, Haytham, Connor and Edward. I want a new story. Elements can be taken, a Desmond cameo, etc. And the reimagining of other characters is awesome. Hound was probably my favorite from AoE, but it was fantastic to see every robot got more lines and screen time all around (Dinobots not withstanding though)
Is it really that big of a deal? In my book the fewer the bots the better. Let me explain. It's because I doubt we'd get the same great characterization in the bots if we had a team of Decepticons as well. Actually, I don't exactly see the difference between using Decepticons and any other villain. They're killer robots, what they are called is kind of irrelevant.
It boils down to one thing cost. Not sure of the correct figure but its ridiculous the amount of money it costs just to have one scene with optimus. To have a full movie wouldn't be profitable with transformers in every scene. The problem lays with the original designs for the first movie. Way too complicated with all the moving parts. Plus alot of the film having in daylight A reboot is the only solution to this problem with simpler robots similar to pacific rim with detail used in films like the hobbit etc
Bay already killed almost every major 'Con anyway, not like there's a lot of great ones left to choose from (in my opinion).
I've said before to have more shots of them in vehicle mode. You can still have them talk in that mode. Bottom line as much as we want to see Decepticons, the writers and studios ain't bothered.
Thundercracker, Skywarp, Coneheads, Astrotrain, Blitzwing, Combaticons, Stunticons, Rumble, Scourge, Straxus, Jhiaxus, Mindwipe, Cyclonus, and heck they could do they Seacons if they wanted to go that route. There are still plenty of big names we have left.
You cant have them be credible heroes sitting in car mode. Good idea to save cash though. That scene in ROFT when Bee, skids and mudflap are just sitting there is weird while everyone is talking.
Honestly, I find this funny. Lots of people have been saying they want a series without Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Starscream. One where other characters get to shine. 2/4 ain't bad. I mean, we got LOCKDOWN as the Big Bad. That's new and interesting and I doubt that could happen in any other part of the franchise. Starscream is dead, and he'll most likely stay dead, along with Soundwave and Shockwave. This will FORCE the movies to focus on other characters, and honestly? I'm okay with that.
I've just given up any sort of hope of ever having cool movie Decepticons out of the production team. Starscream went from taking on a whole squad of jets to totally incompetent. Megatron got so pathetic the eye candy can talk down to him and Megatron just sat there and took it instead of squash the human. Ravage just seemed to be in the movie so Bumblebee could get a Moral Kombat style fatality. Outside of Laserbeak going all evil assassin it's just been sad sad sad movie villains from the Decepticons. And even then Laserbeak gets killed off because that's about all the movies can do with the villains. Decepticons have gotten to be such sad movie villains that they had to use an Autobot gone bad in Dark of the Moon and a free lance bounty hunter in Age of Extinction because the Decepticons just don't seem like a legitimate film threat anymore. For film villains I'll just have to turn to somewhere like the Marvel films where they get why a film villain is so important. The Transformers production team just seems clueless when it comes to crafting the sort of villains that make it seem like the heroes might lose. Or sneaky like Loki who gets a win while the hero was focused on defeating a different foe.
I guess at this point, Decepticons are just background cannon fodder. I was surprised to see them using the logo of the '4' and Decepticon logo to promote AOE early on, considering the lack of cons in this film. Though in a sense, what about ROTF? We had cons all over the place in that one, though only a handful said anything intelligent.
well, to be honest, i feel like we've gotten a good balance of each. in TF1 Frenzy & Barricade represent the decepticons pretty much for the 1st hour of the film. TF2 is basically Megatron's movie. in TF3 -- well, this one was autobot heavy but only because the main villain was also an autobot. i say we got good time with both of each sides hierarchy characters like optimus, bee, ironhide for the autos and like megatron, starscream, soundwave for the decepticons and then lower-tier guys spread about like sideswipe, ratchet, barricade, laserbeak etc.
I was extremely pleased with the Decepticons in this one. Megatron is back - in a way that actually makes sense. And he's freaking immortal now. Was he a powerhouse in this one? No - but you can bet by the next one he will be. He had just finished pulling a Sumdac and finding a way to get some troops. Basically the entire plot of the film was Megatron manipulating everybody behind the scenes to make a come-back....and it almost worked. He and his other soulless drones would have killed the Autobots if the Dinobots hadn't shown up. Lockdown was perfect too. No, technically he's not a Decepticon, but who cares. He was an evil Transformer and he was the best one yet. So we had two plotlines running simultaneously in this one: Megatron making a well planned out comeback which was executed better than anything in the previous films, and Lockdown introducing a completely separate threat in the form of the creators. The next movie is gonna be awesome. It's probably going to center on Bumblebee leading the Autobots on earth against whatever Galvatron comes up with, and Optimus out in space, searching for the creators. Should be pretty epic.
