Alt mode looks ok (could be darker) but bot mode feet? Yikes! Makes Ironhide look like he’s got twinkle toes.
The needed a little adjustment, but I think they look pretty good in person. I will probably repaint them at some point. Just waiting on the wheels and labels now.
Photos by @gbm of these wheels from Shapeways. These are the two-piece version printed in PA12 gray and PA12 black.
Finally got a couple photos of the set I ordered. Two piece set, with rattle can paint on the wheels before gluing together very pleased overall.
Those look great! Thanks for posting photos! Also, my wheel upgrade was featured in a video by Larkin's Lair on YouTube, very cool!
Well deserved! It's a great design. If you're interested in some critical feedback, I would say the clip tolerance could be just a hair tighter. When printed from Shapeways, they stay just fine, but pull out of the rear mounts very easily. I'll probably apply a little bit of nail polish to mine.
I agree with that criticism, but there is a reason for the design being that way. When I printed my copies at home, the clips had a tendency to break. I think this is due to both the print orientation (the direction of the layers is good for ease of printing and print quality - but not for strength) and the silver filament I was using having worse-than-usual layer adhesion. So I tried to design the clips to have the least chance of breaking possible while still holding the wheels on. That consideration was also important for Shapeways too since the prints are so expensive; I didn't want anyone getting prints from there to have breakage issues. I could possibly increase the clip size a teeny tiny bit just for the Shapeways version, since those materials should be stronger than what I'm able to produce at home. Do the clips seem nice and strong to you, able to handle the small flex they're required to make?
I did read your earlier comments, and I do understand your concerns. I feel they are pretty sturdy prints, and you could get away with a little more, but for the same reasons you mentioned, I am a little hesitant to push my luck with it. I have given them a few squeezes between my fingers to know the bounce-back and durability. I know it's a fine line though. Ultimately, a minor criticism. They don't fall out or anything. Just a hair loose in the back, creating a minor sag. Barely noticeable if you're looking.
Do you have any issues with your Ironhide's right ankle? I can pop the new foot in, but if I try to use the ankle swivel, it slides right back out. The left ankle doesn't have this issue. When I look at the right ankle housing with the stock foot in it, it looks like it's being forced out of shape.
Yes, in the foot dedicated thread I commented on it at some point. I had to file the inner top corner of the arch on both feet to reduce collision with his shins. I think it is a minor design flaw. I'll take a pic at home tonight. I did just a hair off the pinky toe corners as well for van mode.
Both my ratchet and Ironhide have a set and I couldn't be happier, printed in resin for the best detail
