In Darkest Hour, Wheeljack does a bit of dogfighting with the jet vehicons. But when Starscream is put into play, he gets shot down. All we see is the Jackhammer (I think that's what it's called) crash behind a mountain and Starscream saying, "And that is how you wreck a Wrecker!" Is Wheeljack dead? or did he survive the crash in some way?

 

I'd say that, considering he has a toy in Wave 1 of Season 3's toyline, there's no way he's dead.

 

We don't know. His fate (along with Optimus' and Airachnid's) should be revealed next season. Honestly, I think he survived, but we'll just have to wait and see.

 

Wheeljack had the most terrible 'I'll be back anyways' death. We see him get shot, the explosion on his ship and then he crashes BEHIND A MOUNTAIN. If that isn't a set-up for a 'here's how I got out' scene next season, I don't know what is.

Though if the show does kill him off, in actual combat, without any emotional impact or direct scene indicating his death, then damn...I might go with it

 

Well, Breakdown is also getting his own CV battle set as well under the Beast Hunters line and the character is dead in the series too.

 

I'm not sure if it matters but said Breakdown toy is only a legends class. Plus I'm sure there would have been an aftermath shot of the crash if he really did die.

 

They won't let him die from the ship, maybe get captured by the cons.

 

Oh I know, I don't think he was killed. Just saying having a toy in the line isn't going to show he's online or not in the series.

 

Considering we didn't see the ship actually crash or him dying, he'll be fine. They could always have him fire a couple missles to cause the explosion & he gets away. Or if the ship is crashed, he'll just climb out.

 

I strongly believe the jackhammer made a crash landing and wheeljack survived fine. There was no huge explosion sound or an eruption of fire shooting up in the sky to indicate that it blew up on contact with the ground.

 

Wheeljack survives to dig out prime and the two will work together to reunite the autobots

 

As others have said, he crashed behind a mountain without any further explosions and what-not.

I'd say he survived.

I have to agree with this. If they don't show him dying (IE: hidden by a mountain) than he didn't die. Same goes for Airachnid.

His "end" is just screaming for either a.) a scene where he emerges from the rubble or b.) a heroic return out-of-nowhere when he then explains how he survived.

Yes, and as we all know everything that each character's bio or packaging art says is 100% canon to the television series/comics/movies.  

Not saying it won't happen, I'm saying that just because it says something happens on the packaging art doesn't mean it'll happen in the show.

 

He's a wrecker. They don't die easily.....well not in the comics atleast and even then they die hardcorely.

I can see him rescuing Optimus's body from the ruins of the base.

I don't think they'd bring Wheeljack back for a cameo to off him this easily.

As a general rule, any time you don't see a body on camera and have a death confirmed by other characters, always assume the character in question survived.
