It just hit me. In the first two seasons of TF Prime, Wheeljack was to the Autobots what Tagatron was to the Maximals. He was one of them, but lived off base and only came around when needed. So much for originality in this show.

While I can see the comparison. The characters are not even close to similar. Tigatron was the honorble fighter always on hand when needed but avoiding needless conflict. Wheeljack is a loose cannon who doesn't care what he has to break to do his job

The concept is similar, but in no way are the characters comparable.

Tigatron was an "Earth-born" Transformer who felt more in tune with nature and the wild due to how he came online. He was passive, polite, and while he spent time away, he never neglected his duty and always showed up when he was needed. He was a good, rounded character. He was a real asset, too, and Optimus never hesitated to call on him when the Maximals needed extra help.

Wheeljack is a flat, two-dimension, stuckup jerk who talks and acts like a bad 90's comic character. He pissfarts around Earth for no good reason and has barely shown up in the show, let alone been of any substance to the plot. He's just "there" and has no interesting relations with anybody there. Even Bulkhead, who's supposed to be his closest friend, seems like a forced friendship. The way he calls him "Jackie" and how they act like frat boys seems so unnatural. (again, this is due to Wheeljack being incredibly flat and contrived) They try and make it look like they have a real friendship, but written by someone who has no idea how friends, especially ones with these personalities, would act. Wheeljack is one of the most inconsequencial characters in the show.

Yeah, I was only talking about concept. Not the same character, but the same character concept.

lol, yes, both shows having 'part-time' characters is clearly the nail in the coffin of originality for TFP.

by that logic, power rangers did that with the 6th ranger in some form or another 3 years before beast wars aired. I guess that means there is nothing original about Beast Wars.

where do people come up with this stuff?

I don't even watch the show anymore. I think Beastwars was and is the pinnacle so far for a TFormers cartoon.

For "living off base and only came around when needed", Tigatron got a heck of a lot more appearances in than Wheeljack has.

Ratchet is, at least he would be if this show was from Japan.

So far he hasn't died an anticlimatic death with a loved one only to return from the dead at the last moment fused together with said loved one and then die like a couple episodes later when its the series finale.

Eh, I guess in the sense of "mostly white-ish character that is in a recurring role that shows up occasionally to help out". But as Split said, Tigatron is basically 10X better at the whole "being an interesting recurring character"-thing.

Following this logic, Ratchet is Dinobot.
