Alternatively: What languages do you speak fluently? This is a pretty generously sized message board with members from all over the world. We can't all be exclusively English speaking. For those who aren't, what is your first language? If you like, you can share when you learnt English, and why. To clarify, I'm asking: 1. What your first language is if it is not English, and 2. Regardless of your first language, if you speak any other languages fluently. Mine is French. I started learning to read English in grade 4 and remained almost exclusively educated in French until the end of grade 9. I'm completely bilingual. I'm told I have a French accent in Spanish, and sound fairly natural in English and Japanese. I'm a big language nerd I think learning languages is a super bomb use of brain space.
English (To think I almost quoted Jules Winnfield) I can also speak a little bit of (Bad) Spanish (two years of High School Spanish Classes were totally worth it in the long run, right?) I can speak a few words of Japanese, French, and German.
Pretty sure I learned to fluently whine & complain long before I learned to speak English (might be why I'm so drawn to this forum), but that's all I got.
Well, I'm kinda boring when it comes to languages for the most part. American English is my native language. Low German I'm sorta fluent in. My Grandparents were all very fluent in it and I could carry on a conversation with them around age 5. High German I learned in HS as my foreign language requirement as it was the ONLY foreign language offered. I've retained enough of both to "comfortably" navigate Germany the last time I was there. I learned a little bit of Pashtun and Farsi from Terps when I was in the service. Not nearly enough to clam being fluent. Same with French when I was in Louisiana, just enough to vaguely understand what individuals were talking about. Currently I'm using the Rosetta Stone program to learn Italian which, know a wee bit of French is helping. I do hope to eventually become fluent in at least 2 languages besides English.
Ayyyy trilingual that's pretty sweet. I'm working hard to get to a somewhat passable level of Japaense. After that I might try Mandarin. I have a friend from Germany! I believe she speaks High German. I went to Italy a couple years ago and knowing French and having just finished a year of spanish made it fairly ok to understand. My family and I bought a bunch of stuff and we were able to communicate during purchases fairly well. Good luck with your learning!
English. Then, I am pretty sure I know enough Spanish to get by in a Spanish-speaking country for a short time.
Guys if you only speak English no offense but I don't care. Of course you speak English, otherwise you wouldn't be here. I'm only asking for fluency in languages other than English.
Only English. But frankly, the booty doesn't need explainin'. All that matters is when yo- this joke is stupid. *sleazy horn line*
English, and despite being half Mexican, I just don't take to Spanish at all. Farsi/Persian comes much more naturally. Of course, there's no place close to where I live that offers Farsi language classes, and most Persians are "een deh Vah-lee" eastward from me, so not many chances for me to converse with anyone on a daily basis. And really, where can I use it? Iran - yeah, probably not going there any time soon. Afghanistan - DEFINITELY not going there any time soon. Tajikistan - eh...many similarities but not quite the same dialect. UAE - I suppose if I hang out around the docks in Abu Dabi or Dubai.
There have been a few posters who's 1st language wasn't English. They were here because of Transformers + internet search.
That's the kind of people I had in mind when I started the thread. That's literally what this thread is about.
