It's annual bonus time at work, and I've put aside a decent amount for doing some fun stuff. As I plot out my purchases (which is half the fun for me anyway), I was curious how other people approach it when they decide to splurge a bit.

Do you pick up a lot of smaller items so you can roll around in them like Scrooge McDuck?

Do you pick up a handful of medium priced toys?

Or do you go HAM and pick up a grail piece while you have the shot?

Sometimes I'll get a few quality pieces, or get something big and worthwhile. I usually get the small/more available stuff regularly, so bigger ticket items are reserved for 'special occasions'.

The last "ones that got away" were MP Starscream's Walmart release and MP-10. I eventually got both of those, but I had to pay damn near double the retail price to get the Hasbro MP-10. If I was more diligent with my search, the way I am with Marvel Legends now, I would have gotten both a long time ago.

Also, I'm glad I just waited for Starscream's TRU release instead of paying out the butt for the Walmart version. He was a pain to get, but I lucked out got him, and mostly thanks to people on this board letting everyone know when he was available online.

I think I'm kinda swayed by the fact that I don't have a huge item I'm chasing right now. I think I'm leaning towards a few really key things I've been sizing up. A few bigger Masterpiece figures, a big Reprolabels order, maybe hit eBay for a few good G1 finds, etc.

I'm currently a niche collector that is currently focusing on TakaraTomy's update to their Headmasters sub-line. I have decided to continue down this path since my preferences are tied to Micro Transformers, but I do not have the time or money to seek the originals out. So my way of going big is through that line.

...Along with the debate if I will be able to continue if/when they expand on the Powermasters, Masterforce Warriors, Micro Warriors, and Micromasters. :p

Quality over quantity here. Got rid of all CHUG and AEC figures and doing Masterpiece right now. Focusing on getting the Takara seekers, just got Thundercracker today.

If I have a bunch of money to spend, I usually spend about half of it on one big ticket item, one quarter on 2-3 medium value items, and one quarter on several cheap things.

For instance, at my last convention I purchased:

Expensive item: G1 Star Saber complete
Medium range expense: Flash Lio Convoy, Centurions Doc Terror complete
Cheap items: a ton of Micromasters for $2-$3 each, Silverhawks Mumbo Jumbo

A few high quality figures. And usually ones on sale so that I can maximize my dollars. It's hard to just dump all my cash on one holy grail when I can take the opportunity to get a few smaller wants that are normally out of reach in a typical week.

When I get some extra "play" money, I tend toward one or two nice things that I've had my eye on. If there is nothing current, then I look at what I might be able to get that I missed out on. If I can't bring myself to waste the money on the current inflated prices of toys that I want, I then kinda splurge on a bunch of little things.

So, my answer to the poll is... yes?

Lots of great input everyone, thanks for the replies! Bonus day was today, so I went with what a lot of you said and spread the love a bit rather than going all in on one giant piece. In the end I wound up doing:

Star Convoy (MIB, and man does it look fresh. Eager to see it in person.)
Victory Saber (complete but loose, and it's also missing Star Saber's smaller gun. If anyone's got a spare kicking around I'm all ears. I blame @brr-icy for this buy, since it's his pictures that enabled me on this one...)
    G1 Smokescreen (complete but loose)
    G1 Sunstreaker (complete but loose)
    MP Star Saber

And finally, not a TF, but I got the SH Figuarts version of Lupin the 3rd, to pal around with my Figuarts Freddie Mercury.

    I take no blame. Lol.

I don't have many small pieces I need anymore, so it's usually a single grail piece.
