A lot of my favorite tunes come from Metroid games. Lower Norfair/Magmoor Caverns, VS Ridley, VS Dark Samus, VS Space Pirates (both the 2D and Prime games have wicked themes), Lower Norfair/Magmoor Caverns, Escape Theme... a million others... Kraid's Lair is top of the list.

    Other faves:
    - Warship Halberd (Kirby SuperStar- another series with a LOT of great tracks)
    - VS Star Wolf -- I particularly like the jazzy Assault version (Star Fox)
    - Reflux the Knaaren (Rayman 3)
    - Master Porky's Theme (Mother 3)
    - the themes for Bowser's levels in Super Mario 64
    - Falling to Earth (Lego City Undercover)
    - Octoman's theme (F-Zero GX)
    - VS Volvogia (LoZ Ocarina of Time)
    - Tetris Type A (especially Super Smash Bros. version)

I always liked the music in Zelda and Castlevania.

Super Castlevania IV stands out for me.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time- Gerudo Valley. Zelda is well known for its fantastic music. I went with this theme because it's one of my favorites of the series. Those Spanish guitars just amp the hype up.

Metroid Prime- Main Theme. The best sounding sci-fi theme in video games. It just sounds so good. Very alien sounding and prepares you to explore a strange planet.

Ace Combat Zero- Zero. Once again with those Spanish guitars. They just sound awesome.
Ace Combat Zero Soundtrack - Zero [HQ] [PS2] - YouTube

Alan Wake- The Poet and the Muse. A good original song that actually is a plot point in the game. It is also worth noting that AW also has an extremely strong licensed sountrack to complement the original stuff like this.
Alan Wake Soundtrack: 08 - Old Gods Of Asgard - The Poet And The Muse - YouTube

Super Mario Galaxy- Gusty Garden. Lots of good, catchy music in the Mario series. This one really stood out towards the beginning of Mario Galaxy, and you were sure that you were in for a fantastic game from that point on.
Super Mario Galaxy: OST #17 - Gusty Garden Galaxy - YouTube

Conker: Live and Reloaded- Windy Theme. When Rare updated this title for the original Xbox, they also overhauled the music. The Windy theme manages to get the mood down perfectly by having this wholesome sounding theme playing in the game's overworld. A nice contrast to the rest of the game.

The Wonderful 101- Tables Turn. Man, oh man. Turn your hype all the way up to 11. Because when you hear this music start up you just know something epic is about to go down, and this is a game that is absolutely overflowing with epic.
Tables Turn - The Wonderful 101 - YouTube

Bioshock Infinite- Elizabeth. Honestly, I think I would like this track a lot if it were in anything. Here it just happened to be in Bioshock. And IMO, music is definitely one of the strong points of the series.
BioShock Infinite OST - Elizabeth - YouTube

Journey- Apotheosis. This is the perfect music to end your Journey on. Full of emotion for getting your guy to the top of the mountain.
Journey Soundtrack (Austin Wintory) - 17. Apotheosis - YouTube

Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins- Level 1 Theme. Its the theme we know from all the GnG games, but this version is a little bit more "complete" feeling than the other themes.
    Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins - Level 1 - YouTube

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes- Heaven's Divide. Like some other notable long running series, you could make a best video game music playlist completely out of music from the Metal Gear series. I went with this because selecting it as the helicopter extract music feels so damn good!
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - MGS Peace Walker Medley - Heavens Divide - YouTube

Mafia- Main Theme. A powerful main theme that sets the mood for one of the best crime stories in gaming.

Final Fantasy VIII tops my charts. Game is complete shit, but the soundtrack is Uematsu's best work imo. Every track just makes me smile. Man, it still makes me wish that the game was better because the soundtrack was the only redeeming quality there.

FF VI soundtrack was also excellent too. SF Alpha 2 and Guilty Gear (entire XX series) were amazing. Some of the best tracks to fight to.

I agree with many of these. Here's some of my favorites.

I still think Wild Arms has one of the best intro themes.

It's also got a pretty spiffy map theme, too.

All four of Grandia 2's battle themes are fantastic.

Yes, thank you thank you for giving props to Journey to Silius. Amazing and underappreciated music. Actually, most of Sunsoft's NES games had great music; Blaster Master, Batman, Gremlins 2, even Fester's Quest.

Agreed. FFVIII is by far not the best FF game (and includes the most contrived plot moment in any FF game), but the music is good. Although I personally find the soundtracks for VI and IX more to my liking.
