I saw a film called Hard Candy about a year ago. It was on one of my cable channel and the description it had made it sound like a suspense movie. Boy was I wrong. It wasn't gory, but it had some disturbing things in it. I won't spoil, but the "villain" got what he deserved at the end.

Naked Lunch is disturbing to me.

but David Cronenberg, that man's career is disturbing. (look at his filmography.)

Hmm. I try to stay away from disturbing movies, but the Saw films, Child's Play films, to some minor extent the first Gremlins movie, and Paranormal Activity. Also, the first Alien had me pretty damn disturbed when I saw it for the first couple of times.

Had a "controversial films" class in college, saw a few pretty mind-altering ones in there:

Salo (pretty sickening film about Italian fascists during WW2 essentially torturing a group of teenagers to death)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Man Bites Dog (Belgian black comedy about a film crew following a serial killer.... though it does have a pretty great ending)

I'd never watch any of those again. Honestly, I'm pretty much a wimp when it comes to movies depicting human suffering and carnage. I have a really hard time watching them, they stick with me way more than they should (even the ones intended as black comedy), and I just don't want that stuff in my brain. That's why I'll never watch Saw or Hostel or Audition or any other "torture porn" films. Honestly, I don't even like disaster movies, as a rule, because of the sheer callousness they generally show toward human life.

The older I get the more sensitive I am to violent films. There is enough horrific, pointless waste of life in the real world, I like my films to give a bit more dignity to human life. It's not that I mind death or serious themes in movies, I just don't like callousness.

    Amen.

Though I can tolerate these elements if they are in cartoon/animation form.

Saw isn't that disturbing. I thought Paranormal Activity was pretty fucked up and I couldn't sleep.

    The Crying Game. Hands down.

And this movie also ruined Stargate for me instantly when it came out in theaters. Hahahaha.

Threads. Scared the utter fuck out of me when I saw it as a teenager (it used to be shown in schools). Still does now. Tells the the story of the build-up to, actual event, and aftermath of a nuclear war, set in and around the English city of Sheffield. Go check it out, it will absolutely terrify you.
